Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

Series 12 - 13. Mask

A bit of a treat tonight: Jeremy Irons guest-stars in a role written specially for him. Some generic TV shows would be capsized by a movie star jumping aboard but SVU takes visiting A-listers in its stride and Irons fits right in – so much so that he later returned for a second episode.

He plays Cap Jackson, a former sex-addict and alcoholic who now works as a therapist treating addicts like himself. His belief is that sex addiction is an illness like depression, so it can be treated. The SVU’s resident psychologist Dr Wong is a fan, though Stabler prefers the “they’re animals who should be locked up” approach. As ever, Irons is wonderfully watchable in an overheated tale of a masked rapist.

About this programme

13/24. Stabler and Benson investigate the rape of Debbie Shields in her home and are approached by Captain Jackson, who is the father of the victim's partner Ann and a psychiatrist specialising in treating sex addicts. A particular phrase used by the assailant strikes a chord with Jackson, but he refuses to say why due to doctor-patient confidentiality - and Stabler goes undercover at his rehabilitation clinic after there is a similar attack in Virginia. Guest starring Jeremy Irons.
