Best chef friends Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo return to their homeland to eat and ask young women if their Italian mammas taught them to cook, and if not why not? Provided you can stomach a steady drizzle of Mediterranean misogyny, you’ll soak up their recipes and chat, and sigh wistfully as they lift cured meat to nostril height, inhale, then shovel it down like starved bears.
This is Hairy Bikers with pasta instead of pies, but it’s also a charming exploration of Italian food culture now and then. As well as fondling salami, the pair visit a plush state-run countryside drug rehab centre, where patients make cheese as part of their recovery.
Former addicts gush about ricotta and the facility’s 2,000 residents eat every delectable-looking meal together. Here, and at alarmingly regular intervals, the chefs tear up, which is a little bit adorable.

About this programme

1/4. Chefs Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo tour Italy to discover how their home country's culture has changed since they left more than 40 years ago, and how this has affected the way the population eats. Beginning in Emilia Romagna, the pair have Sunday lunch with a traditional family, before meeting career women in Bologna who do not cook at home any more.
