HOLLYOAKS
Those who compare the furies of hell and scorned women might like also to measure the rage of abandoned children. For if Niall Rafferty's wrath at being deserted by Myra McQueen is anything to go by, the resentment of those left as babies by a parent may make the ire of wronged women pale in comparison.

Since he swaggered into Hollyoaks, hair stylist Niall's determination to wreak revenge on the McQueen clan has been almost admirable. Indeed, perhaps the greatest tragedy of the situation is Niall's wasted potential: with resolve such as his, imagine what he could have achieved had he not given himself over to bitterness.

But bitter he is, and with serpentine skill he's inveigled his way into the family and administered all manner of malice. From his attacks on Nana and Tina, the latter of which resulted in the premature birth of her baby and her subsequent hysterectomy, to his murder of Father Kieron, Niall's machinations have ranged from the horrible to the heinous. Remember also that he persuaded the McQueens that Michaela was a heroin addict by forcibly injecting her with drugs, and that he tried to poison John-Paul. (On the plus side, he also grassed up Myra for benefit fraud.)

While he has been able to justify his punishment of the McQueens, Niall's twisted logic has provided no comfort in his killing of Max Cunningham. Feeling genuine remorse for depriving Steph of her husband and Tom of his beloved big brother has shaken Niall, and his subsequent relationship with the pair could have proved his redemption. However, as the secret of his true identity is threatened and his affection for Steph rattles him further, it seems the only glimmer of goodness in Niall's life is about to be extinguished.

Like Weatherfield's Battersbys, Walford's Slaters, and the Dingles of the Dales, the McQueens are that Soapland staple - a family from hell. So it's perhaps no surprise that they seem about to sample damnation at the hands of one of their own.

Crush

Newt's state of mind is fragile, so seeing "dead" Jack alive sends him spiralling into despair. Can Darren persuade him to keep quiet?

Flush

The Laurel and Hardy of Chester, Gilly and Zak make a surprising success of a stint in the new kebab shop. Doner look too disappointed, Leila.

Mush

Love on the rocks? Actually, make that a double for Louise, whose alcohol-fuelled antics prove too much for Warren, and push him further into Mandy's arms. Someone will be nursing a hangover soon.
