| CORONATION STREET |
|
When Tony Warren created Coronation Street, he wrote three character sketches for the purposes of casting. He described Ena Sharples as "Doomsday in woman's clothing", Annie Walker as "a publican's wife and looks it", and Elsie Tanner as having "the very battered, and much painted over, remains of good looks". With those words he created the iconic Corrie woman. Whether walking wounded like Bet Gilroy, a battleaxe like Ivy Tilsley or a flibbertigibbet like Raquel Wolstenhulme, Weatherfield women are gutsy, as Daran Little explains in his book The Women of Coronation Street. They stride Corrie's cobbles like Mancunian Amazons in slingbacks and slippers.
In recent times there have been three outstanding additions to the sisterhood, Tina McIntyre, Becky Grainger and Carla Gordon. Tina announced her arrival, a mere year ago, by railing against Gail in the medical centre. Feisty, beautiful and wearer of an impressive array of earrings, Tina is tiny dynamite, even taming David .
Becky is nothing short of the spiritual granddaughter of Elsie Tanner. It was Elsie who once said, "I've been kicked in the teeth often enough so it doesn't really come as a surprise. But it doesn't stop hurting," but those words could so easily fall from Ms Grainger's mouth.
And then there's alpha female Carla. In two years, after her first husband died she had an affair with his brother, and then unwittingly married her lover's murderer. That's the plot of a film noir. And her life is about to take a darker turn as she finally confronts Tony over his part in Liam's death. But you suspect she'll emerge stronger than ever. As Des Barnes once remarked, "The women in this street are capable of anything."
Mire
Never mind Tammy Wynette, standing by your man can be risky. Having corroborated David's lies about Gary, Tina is in the firing line as the Windass clan tries to convince her to tell the truth.
Fire
Their canalside encounter is proving ever more romantic for soulmates Ken and Martha and the spark of attraction burns brighter each time they meet. Shame, then, he's failed to mention he has a wife.
Dire
Littered with illicit liaisons, adultery and stupidity, the love lives of the Websters are so disastrous that even the Red Cross won't get involved. So what awaits Sophie when the charming Ben asks her out? |
