If you're from Solihull, you'll think the above is a typing mistake: the Midlands town already has a shopping centre called Touchwood. But Councillor Richard Foley, who represents the Cardiff districts of Llanishen and Thornhill, is asking the local authority to use the name of the hit BBC show for a new shopping development.
Cardiff's new £650m project is currently known as St David's 2, after the city's existing St David's Centre. "I have been told that St David's 2 is a working title," said Councillor Foley. "But we have still not had a debate on what the name should be, despite repeated requests from myself and other members. If it could be called Torchwood I think it would be amazing and a boost for tourism. The programme has showcased the city so well."
Don't put money on it, however. Council leader Rodney Berman says: "Torchwood is a great ambassador for the city. On a personal level I have a lot of sympathy for the idea but the practicalities are not that simple: the council does not have the rights to the name Torchwood. That rests with the BBC."
