ITV turns to US for inspiration - 1 May 2007

ITV Productions is turning to America for inspiration
As BBC1 prepares to launch the police procedural drama Holby Blue, ITV Productions has announced that it's looking to America and particularly the HBO cult hit The Wire for inspiration for its new show Liaison.

"In format it will be inspired by the acclaimed HBO series The Wire," said writer John Fay, best known for the recent ITV thriller Mobile. "More of a television novel than a cop show, it will have a beginning, middle and an end, and play out over two series."

The new series will be about police liaison officers dealing with the parents of both murder victims and of murderers.

Season-long storylines are not exclusive to The Wire, however, and are arguably falling out of fashion: Lost is struggling in the ratings in the US and Veronica Mars has dropped the idea in favour of stand-alone one and two-part tales instead.
