Internet message boards were bursting with angry comments after Mafia drama series The Sopranos came to an end in the US on Sunday night (9 June). David Chase's violent, darkly humorous and thought-provoking drama was a hit with both fans and critics, but for many the last ever instalment proved something of a damp squib.
Although the episode was not universally panned - and critics took a more enthusiastic view than fans - a straw pole of online forums suggests that only one in ten of those contributing to the debate had positive comments to make.
So just what was it that so incensed loyal viewers, causing some to demand their money back from pay-per-view programme-makers HBO, and others to label the finale "lame"?
With the show yet to air in the UK, to give away specific details would spoil the surprise. Suffice it to say that, despite the tying up of a number of loose ends, the series finishes abruptly and ambiguously, leaving the biggest questions of all unanswered.
