Lindsay Duncan's big break - Radio Times, December 2005

Lindsay Duncan in Rome © BBC/HBO
"It was [Grown-Ups,] a Mike Leigh drama for BBC Playhouse. After Nuts in May [1976] and Abigail's Party [1977] he was someone you wanted to work with. All his work is improvised. With Mike you never know anything as an actor that you don't know as your character [a middle-class woman in an emotionally barren marriage]. When you're used to being aware of a whole script, that's like walking blindfolded. You're working in isolation until you're put in contact with another character. There was a faint paranoia - you wondered whether everyone else was doing a more interesting storyline than you."
