Mars spin-off faces no-smoking challenge - Radio Times, March 2007 |
 |
|
|
Kim Newson ponders a cigarette-free future for Seventies copper Gene Hunt.
"Back in 1973, when Life on Mars
is set, the first national No Smoking Day was
11 years in the future - not that DCI Gene Hunt
would have taken any notice of it.
But if Gene is really going to be in the
forthcoming Life on Mars spin-off, what are
they going to do about filming his fag habit?
During the first series of Mars they got though
a staggering 12,000 herbal cigarettes to avoid
smogging up the scenes, but even those won't
be allowed under the no-smoking ban that
comes into force in England in July:
TV sets are enclosed workplaces,
so they're covered by the ban.
Us Mars fans think the answer is
in the spin-off's title, Ashes to Ashes:
the whole thing could revolve around
Gene trying to give up and getting even
grumpier - if that's
possible
"
