Mars spin-off faces no-smoking challenge - Radio Times, March 2007

Kim Newson ponders a cigarette-free future for Seventies copper Gene Hunt.

"Back in 1973, when Life on Mars is set, the first national No Smoking Day was 11 years in the future - not that DCI Gene Hunt would have taken any notice of it.

But if Gene is really going to be in the forthcoming Life on Mars spin-off, what are they going to do about filming his fag habit? During the first series of Mars they got though a staggering 12,000 herbal cigarettes to avoid smogging up the scenes, but even those won't be allowed under the no-smoking ban that comes into force in England in July: TV sets are enclosed workplaces, so they're covered by the ban.

Us Mars fans think the answer is in the spin-off's title, Ashes to Ashes: the whole thing could revolve around Gene trying to give up and getting even grumpier - if that's possible…"
