Creating the Camberwick Green dream sequence - Radio Times, March 2007 |

Nick Griffiths finds out why one episode of Life on Mars went back to the 60s for inspiration.
"In the opening scenes of [episode five] of Life on Mars, the lead
characters appear as puppets -
Camberwick Green-style. The
children's show, which first aired in
1966, became hugely popular with
the nation's youngsters when it was
repeated during the 70s.
"It was probably my favourite programme of 1973," says Life on
Mars co-creator Matthew Graham,
"so I thought I'd love to get
something that was the distillation
of my childhood into the show."
Hot Animation, makers of Bob
the Builder and Pingu, produced the
footage, using the techniques of the
era - so, yes, those are ping-pong ball
heads on Sam Tyler,
Gene Hunt and the
"nonce" in Y-fronts
whom Gene duffs up.
The segment is woven
into the story as a dream
sequence. When Graham
saw the end result, he was
impressed: "I thought it
was beautiful. I burst out
laughing, then I thought,
'This isn't funny - it's
charming'."
