Vincent D'Onofrio on Robert Goren - Radio Times, 3 February 2004 |

Vincent D'Onofrio describes his character,
Detective Robert Goren, as a modern-day
Sherlock Holmes, in the Law and Order spin-off
Criminal Intent. "Alex Eames
[Kathryn Erbe] is closest to me. We're an equal
team in which I'm the Holmes character, and
she's more like Watson," says D'Onofrio. "My
relationship with the others is not as tight. My
character does things they don't like. It was
interesting to learn how far the real major case
squad go - how much they lie, humiliate and
manipulate - to solve these crimes."
The show's format, with viewers seeing a
murder and then following the detectives
tracking down the perpetrator, appeals to
D'Onofrio. "It isn't about law or order, it's
about the psychology of a killer," he says.
"I wanted to focus on the kind of cop I was
playing, rather than on the cop work.
I believe our show is a psychological game
Goren plays with his suspects."
