Marc Warren Q&A - Radio Times, April 2006

Marc Warren as Danny Blue in Hustle © BBC
Benji Wilson talks to the star of Hustle about the third series of the con-trick show.

BW: You're coming to the end of the third series of Hustle. You've been enjoying yourself, haven't you?

MW:Well, yes. In the first episode we got into rapping, bling, and the Mobo awards with Mel Smith…

Mel Smith and rapping - it's not the most obvious link…

No - but his character's son wanted to be a rap star. This week we're skydiving. Well, it looks like we're skydiving, but they wouldn't let us. Adrian [Lester] wanted to do it, but I didn't. Adrian's fearless and I'm…

A coward?

Er, yeah. But Adrian and I did run naked through Trafalgar Square for real in the first episode. Full frontal. We had our hands over - you can't legally show… everything. But they didn't cordon it off, so I was literally running around for six hours surrounded by bewildered faces.

Hustle's always good to watch. Is it as much fun to do as it appears?

It is, but predominantly it's hard work. Three and a half months where your social life just goes out the window. It's long hours, you know. Often six- day weeks and it's relentless - we're in it all the time, so there's no breather. But we all get on, and there's a great chemistry between us.

It's just gone over to America, where it's had rave reviews.

Yeah, we went over there in January to do the launch. It's amazing going to New York with Robert Vaughn. Going through Times Square and down Broadway in a cab with a legend is something I won't forget.

Did the New Yorkers think the rest of you were his minders?

I don't think so, no. It's been received very well over there - it's all good.

The guest stars are always amazing. Do stars like yourself still get star-struck?

I constantly have that with Robert. It's not stopped. And to meet Richard Chamberlain in one episode as well was incredible. When are you ever going to get to sit at a table with Napoleon Solo and Dr Kildare like I did?

Are there actually people who do these so-called long cons?

I think so, absolutely. Never met them myself, but they must be very ruthless, skilled and dedicated individuals. There are people who make a living out of it. Not the way we do it. You'd never get anywhere doing it the way we do, although it makes great telly.

One final question: your acting CV includes a gang rapist, an informer, a skinhead, a hooligan… What is it about you that says "nutter"?

The only thing about me that says that is my work! I think it must be the eyes. And a lot of pent-up stuff that only gets shown on screen. I don't know why I got into the nutters, but I seem to be coming out of it. I'm getting more funny work now, so maybe I could mix the two - you know, do funny nutters.
