Ashley Walters joins the cast - Radio Times, April 2007

Nick Griffiths gets the lowdown on the new Hustle star.

"His character's name's Bond. Billy Bond. "He's a con artist," explains Ashley Walters. "He started out as a pickpocket, that's his main trade. He does [less elaborate] 'short cons' - he's very good at convincing people to do something they wouldn't usually do. But he's always been fascinated by 'long con' artists. He knows about the Hustle crew and he hears on the grapevine that they're looking for a new guy to train, so he makes it his business to find them."

Coincidentally, Walters knows the man he's replacing. "I did Storm Damage with Adrian Lester in 2000. So it's weird coming into this when he's left - it's like I'm filling his shoes. Even though Billy's the kid of the gang, I get a lot of responsibility."

Walters, who was sentenced to 18 months in jail in 2001 for possessing a loaded gun while a rapper with So Solid Crew, is now a rising star in the acting game, with roles in Bullet Boy, Get Rich or Die Tryin' and Life and Lyrics.

Vaughn says of his new co-star: "With Ashley there's a great combination of little-boy charm and, somewhere behind, flashes of violence. He's a good actor. I think the combination works very well."

And when Jaime Murray describes her male colleagues on the show as being "like older brothers", she adds: "Ashley's been a huge rap artist and he's had quite a colourful past, and you would think that might change someone. But he's just been an utter sweetheart.

"I was being particularly silly one day and he turned to me and said, 'Who'd have thought when I watched you on telly, Jaime, that I'd end up loving you so much?' I was just like, 'Ahhh.'"
