"I spent time going out with real detectives and I can't understand how they find time for any kind of life outside their job. The amount of red tape they have to deal with is incredible.

"We went to arrest this guy and, even though they knew he was in, they couldn't do anything because he wouldn't open the door. They had to leave a calling card like the gas man! I wanted to just get in there, but you can't do that any more."

"When I first picked up this script I thought it was a late-night thing about naughty nurses. Then I read it and realised, 'Oh f***, it's a cop show.' But these coppers are all very human. They've all got an Achilles heel.

"And, to me, that's the reality of modern policing. It's just a bunch of regular people trying to do the right thing - unfortunately, they don't always make the right decisions."

"As an actor, you try and bring something of yourself to the table. I'm not quite sure why this happened, but whatever I brought has got me a lot of police roles.

"I suppose the first one was Ronald Merrick in The Jewel in the Crown - he was a policeman who then joined the army - and that stamped me with some kind of mark of authority. Even though it was a long time ago, it seems to be how people still see me."

"After EastEnders I was going to take some time off, because I kept getting offered lots of 'Little Mo' parts. But as soon as this came along I knew it was something I wanted to do. It feels like one of those great BBC ensemble dramas. And it's nice for me to be on the right side of the tracks for a change… I normally end up playing some crim or slag."

"Wearing the uniform is a very strange experience. Because of how I was brought up, I've always had a lot of respect for the police, so I felt like there was a lot to live up to - even though I've only got a desk job.

"It actually makes me feel embarrassed when I read how much the police or nurses get paid and I think about how much actors get paid. There's something wrong somewhere."
