Jenny Eden chatted to the Grey's Anatomy star.
JE: You play Dr Derek "McDreamy"
Shepherd in US medical drama
Grey's Anatomy. Is that a hard
nickname to live up to?
PD: I don't think he's a real guy. They've
created this idealised man, a fantasy
of what women want. Sometimes I
think, "I would never say that".
What's it like now "McSteamy"
(Eric Dane) is in competition to
be the show's sex symbol?
It's humbling when he takes his shirt
off. He goes to the gym and he
sends me pictures of himself
to rub it in.
Did you do much
research for the
role?
We all watched
surgeries, but I can't
stand going into
hospitals. It's the
smell, the lighting,
and when you go
to do the research,
there are sick people
everywhere and
you're like, "Oh,
my God". It's so sad
because people have a
huge crisis moment
in their lives in these
hospital rooms.
You were best known in 80s
movies as the awkward
teenager who got the girl
against the odds.
I started at 17 and went from
movie to movie. I had no
life experience other
than being on a
movie set. Success came very quickly and it was
taken away very quickly. But I'm
amazed at how Can't Buy Me Love
[1987] has stood up over 20 years and
the impact it's had. That's still a huge
one when people come up to me.
Why do your first TV series now?
I didn't want to be on location and
I was tired of living in hotels. I didn't
want to be away from my daughter or
my wife. I like going home and having
my life; I don't need to be a superstar.
Would you have done ER if you
had the chance in the early days?
I probably wouldn't have been ready
at that time. There was a stigma when
I first came into the business where
you never got into television because
you couldn't cross over to films.
Now everybody's doing
it and I'm ready to do
this. Sure, I would like
the opportunities
that being
George Clooney
gives you.
Have you
changed?
Yes, I don't take
the highs too
seriously,
and I don't
take the lows
too seriously,
but I do take
the pay cheque
extremely
seriously. It's fun
to escape reality
before I go back
and change diapers.
Was there any rivalry between
you and Hugh Laurie when you
were both up for Golden Globes
this year?
Yeah, it was kind of a kick. He does a
really good job on that show [House]
so I didn't expect to win. I was happy
to be invited to the party. A couple of
years ago we were wondering if the
show would even be seen. Now here
we are fighting over what tux to wear
to the awards ceremonies.
