Karl Theobald on Martin Dear - Radio Times, October 2004 |

David Butcher gets the actor's take on his hapless Green Wing alter ego.
"Karl
Theobald's face may be unfamiliar to anyone
except cabaret audiences and fans of Channel 4's
brilliant Green
Wing. A former stand-up comic,
Theobald plays hopeless Dr Martin Dear with a clumsy panache that calls to mind other great screen klutzes - like Norman
Wisdom,
I suggest.
"I'd prefer Buster Keaton,"
Theobald
counters.
"Martin's a classic loser,
the awkward
geek who one day will let his hair down and
show that really he's beautiful."
Then he adds,
"Except that'll never happen."
We
almost see Martin's inner beauty in this
week's episode,
when a surprise dance sequence
allows
Theobald to show off his silky moves.
His
gift for physical comedy clearly extends beyond
juggling clipboards and riding a scooter badly.
"I was just messing about in rehearsal one day,
doing a dance,
and they said,
'We should do a
scene like that,'
so I pretty much improvised it."
Thirty-five-year-old
Theobald completed his
first feature film role in May and hopes to direct
more in future.
Meanwhile,
the success of
Green Wing
is a welcome taste of fame.
"It's a
very strange thing.
I left drama school with no
agent,
no work and no food,
so it's great when
something finally takes off."
