Mathew Horne almost missed out on the title role in Gavin & Stacey because he was already appearing in a BBC2 sitcom called Roman's Empire.
"The BBC didn't want me in two lead parts," he says. "When Gavin & Stacey came along, there was a real battle. I think Steve Coogan and Henry Normal, whose company Baby Cow make the
show, fought for me. It all came through in the end, though."
But how can he be so sure the BBC tried to stop him playing Gavin? "I had already lost a big part I was offered in another BBC3 comedy because of Empire."
