ER stars become Oscar nominees - Radio Times, February 2007

1994 George Clooney played Doug Ross for five years. Won best supporting actor for Syriana in 2006.

1994 William H Macy had an occasional role as head of the ER, Dr Morgenstern, for four years, during which he received his best supporting actor nomination for Fargo in 1997.

1999 Djimon Hounsou played an African hospital porter before going on to receive best supporting actor nominations for In America in 2004 and, this time round, Blood Diamond.

1999 Alan Alda spent a few episodes as Dr Gabe Lawrence, Kerry Weaver's former mentor. He too was later nominated for best supporting actor (The Aviator, 2005).

2002 Don Cheadle played Paul Nathan, a surgical resident struggling with Parkinson's, for four memorable episodes. His best actor nomination came in 2005 for Hotel Rwanda.
