Douglas Adams's Doctor Who restored - 24 July 2007

Douglas Adams's Doctor Who restored
He's famous for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in all its many guises. But just as he was finding that fame for himself, Douglas Adams was a script editor and writer on Doctor Who. Now his 1978 tale The Pirate Planet, starring Tom Baker and Mary Tamm, is coming to DVD - after being extensively restored.

"Studio scenes were exceptionally vibrant with good resolution," says the Doctor Who Restoration Team website. But filmed inserts were another matter. "The physical splices cause a distortion and in the case of The Pirate Planet these were particularly extreme. All sequences involving gunfire had to be remade."

The team is a group of video and audio experts who painstakingly restore video to bring it up to modern DVD standards and also produce extras for new releases. The Pirate Planet is to be part of the six-story Doctor Who: The Key to Time release, which will feature over 30 extra interviews, including archive ones with Douglas Adams.

The set is due to be released on 24 September at a retail price of £69.99.
