Benji Wilson talks to the Desperate Housewives star.
BW: When we last saw Edie, at the end of Desperate Housewives season three, she appeared to be about to do away with herself. Yet here you are
NS: Were you worried? I thought it was great. It was really hard having a gag order on me all last year. I kept being approached by strangers in the street saying, "Does Edie live or die?" They
were extremely upset about it. And what I heard a lot was, "If Edie dies, I'm not watching the show any more." So I thought, "Yesss! This is good."
Pretending to kill herself was a little extreme, even for Edie.
She was fraught. It was a real struggle for her, falling in love with Carlos, when he didn't feel the same way. She didn't know how to handle it. She'd really opened herself up to him - one of my favourite scenes last season was when she stripped for him, both physically and emotionally, and wanted to be seen for who she was and appreciated for that. She attempted suicide, but ultimately it was about master manipulation.
And this season?
Of course, she now has Carlos where it counts, so we have a love triangle going on. It seems that the gorgeous little Mexican [Gabrielle, played by Eva Longoria] is going to get him, and then [cackles] Carlos is going to pay! When Edie puts her nose to the ground, nobody's safe! By hook or by crook, she likes to win.
Are there new characters to look forward to in the new series?
Dana Delany plays Katherine, a new housewife who sort of "out-Brees" Bree. She's a wonderful addition. Ooh, is she wicked! See, Edie has nothing to worry about. And Nathan [Fillion], who plays Katherine's husband Adam, is fabulous as well. Then there are our gorgeous gay boys, who move in next to Susan [Teri Hatcher] and fall out pretty much straightaway - they bring a whole new dynamic to the street.
It must be a giggle playing the vamp.
I love the shock value. Edie's the most fabulous, audacious character on TV. But I also like that she is a person; she's multilayered and breakable. And it's a challenge, when you play a bad girl,
to find ways to make her likeable.
She does have a habit of falling in love with the other girls' men
It's a very small town. I love her. She's just misunderstood.
Do you share any traits with her?
I'm much more reserved, but I get to live things out through her. Edie has a fabulous wardrobe,
but, I mean, have you seen those hot pants? It's horrifying if I haven't been running for a week. I think, "No, I'll march into the wardrobe trailer and find some long pants."
You're engaged to be married to Michael "The Voice" Bolton - have you got a date yet?
We haven't decided where we're doing it yet. The date will come after we decide where. Michael's been touring and I've been working, so it's hard to eke out some time. Eva managed it on a weekend, but we were back to work that Monday. She did get a few days in the Caribbean later, but not without a fight.
One final question: a little bird tells me that there's a big hurricane coming through Wisteria Lane and you die. True?
[Laughing] Wrong! All right? We've taken care of that one.
Totally unfounded?
In episode nine, a huge natural disaster wreaks havoc. There's a death. Perhaps two. That's all
I'm saying
