Jane Rackham shares some facts about CSI: Crime Scene Investigation's leading man.

"It's hard to believe, but the man who plays Gil Grissom, CSI's sharpest forensic scientist, is clueless when it comes to science. When William "Billy" Petersen was at school, his science and maths were so bad that he had to take drama to improve his grades. "That's why I'm an actor now," he says.

The youngest of a large blue-collar family, Petersen gained a football scholarship at Idaho State University, where he also took a stagecraft course. By 1975 he was married, had a daughter and was performing in a theatre group in Chicago.

Roles in To Live and Die in LA, Manhunter and Cousins followed. He admits he was "a bit of a snob" about TV, fearing he'd lose "my soul and freedom". Then came CSI and a Golden Globe nomination.

Petersen, now 50 and remarried, was not thrilled by the arrival of a Miami-based CSI clone, which he nicknamed "NYPDCSI" because it stars NYPD Blue's David Caruso. "I won't have anything to do with it," he grumbled at the time. "They should have waited five years." "
