Jenny Eden finds out how the Who's frontman was transformed for his guest role in CSI.
"Roger Daltrey could barely
see traces of himself when
he looked in the mirror
after hours in CSI's make-up
chair. The show's make-up experts
used their special-effects wizardry to
transform him into four characters:
a fisherman, a karaoke crooner,
a crook - and an elderly
black woman!
The producers had
been trying to get
the Who's frontman to
guest-star since the show
adopted the band's
classic hit Who Are You
as its theme tune seven
years ago. "My agent
called up and asked: 'How would
you like to do CSI?'" recalls Daltrey.
"How could I refuse? It felt like an
honour." With Daltrey on board, the
CSI team came up with plum role for
him: a mobster called Mikey Dunn
who dons elaborate disguises in order
to murder his former associates.
Each character was designed
using Daltrey's photograph as a
base, with new features added using
computer software. A cast was taken
of his face, clay was sculpted onto
a cast of his head, then latex moulds
were made of each character's face.
Wigs were made to match, and when
Daltrey arrived to film the
episode the latex masks
were glued on top of his
face, then make-up used
to blend the skin tones
and cover the joins.
However, when he sat
down in the make-up
chair, Daltrey had no idea
what he was going to look
like as each finished character.
"I came off stage in Seattle on
a Thursday night [after a Who gig]
and then I was here on the Friday
shooting it," says Daltrey. "It's great
fun when you're actually on the set
doing it, but I prefer the day job -
I think I'll stick with the band."
The fisherman disguise was so
effective that CSI executive producer
Doug Petrie almost had his guest star
thrown off set. "We were on location
and I thought he was a homeless
guy," says Petrie.
CSI's Marg Helgenberger says the
cast were impressed with Daltrey's
performance: "He was in the midst of
a tour with the Who and was having
to play all these different personas,
with prosthetics and different accents.
It's a lot for anyone."
