Michael Gambon's big break - Radio Times, 2 December 2007

Michael Gambon as Mr Holbrook in Cranford Image © BBC
"I played Gregory in Romeo and Juliet in a season of Shakespeare plays for the BBC in 1967. It wasn't one of the great roles - Gregory, as I remember, is just a little bloke who puts his thumb up in the air and has about four lines to speak.

"They used to do proper plays back then. More of them, anyway. A play on Sunday and a play on Wednesday. [TV companies] argue that they haven't dropped their drama output because soaps fill that role. But it's hardly the same. There's no depth in soaps. It's the depth you miss."
