Re-creating the Blitz club - Radio Times, February 2008 |

Nick Griffiths joins the cast and crew of Ashes to Ashes as they revive the spirit of influential 80s club the Blitz.
Ashley Pharoah on visiting the real Blitz
"I was living down in Brighton and
we all knew the Blitz was the [clubbing]
mecca, so I went up on the train
a couple of times, around 1981. It was an amazing place.
"I'm ashamed to say [I wore a] big
white frilly shirt, earrings the size of
Wales, hair shaved at the sides, long
and dyed blond at the front, with
coloured bits and ribbons. Mascara.
I thought I looked like Adam Ant,
but I saw some photos recently
and I looked like my auntie."
Re-creating the look of the new romantics
"It was amazing seeing Steve Strange doing Fade to Grey,
with all these kids dressed as new
romantics. Just very exciting. I sat
behind the camera and remember
saying to [series co-creator] Matthew
Graham, 'Have we got the best job
in the world? I think we have.'"
ASHLEY PHAROAH, co-creator
"It
took a lot of blow-drying. [And make-up's] gone across the board.
Pale bases. Lots of bright,
quite stripey eye shadow, lots of kohl inside the eyes - a very popular 80s
look. For the Blitz, we needed ten
[freelancers] in to help us. Even
Marshall [Lancaster, who plays Chris] had make-up on."
SIÂN TURNER, hair and make-up assistant
"I looked like a warped Edward
Scissorhands. That's the only way to
describe it. My character, Chris, didn't
want to let anybody know that he'd
been wearing make-up. It wouldn't
have gone down too well in CID."
MARSHALL LANCASTER, actor
"You couldn't have
gone to Top Shop to buy those
clothes, so you used to buy a
length of fabric and make them.
It wasn't silly; it was theatrical.
You raided your granny's wardrobe;
you cut your hair yourself; you found
a bottle of black nail varnish. It was
incredibly creative and that's what
we were trying to put across."
