Philip Glenister on the Audi Quattro - Radio Times, 14 February 2008

It's partly the detail that makes Ashes to Ashes so effective - like pairing Gene Hunt with an Audi Quattro.

"It looks fantastic on the outside," says Philip Glenister, who plays the maverick detective. "They've done a good job on the paintwork and the bodywork, but it's done about 157,000 miles. It must have been so ahead of its time: four-wheel drive and it had an immobiliser on it. Which is not great for quick getaways."

In fact, the Quattro was a highly successful rally car in its day, as well as pushing the boundaries of technology. "I don't think they came into this country until after 1981 [when Ashes to Ashes is set] actually, but it's a cool car. If you've got to follow the Cortina, you can't exactly have a Mini Metro. Like the Cortina in Life on Mars, it needs looking after. You can only do so much with it in a day - a bit like me! If I do too much, just like the Audi, I start spluttering."
