"I think they must have run out of old actors to play lords!" says Geoffrey Palmer, who plays Lord Scarman in Ashes to Ashes. Scarman headed the official inquiry into the Brixton riots in 1981. "Lord Scarman didn't do the whitewash the government expected of him; he did what he thought was right," says Palmer.
Not that DCI Gene Hunt is in agreement with the Law Lord's report. "He turns on Scarman and has a wonderful speech which, if he were on stage, the audience would be cheering. Philip [Glenister] does it wonderfully."
