Will Baker on Kylie and Doctor Who

Kylie Minogue as Astrid in Doctor Who
Kylie's creative director Will Baker took RT's exclusive photographs of the star alongside David Tennant on the Doctor Who set. He told us all about the experience and provided a few insights into the filming of the Christmas special.

Was Kylie as excited as you were on the set?

The Tardis set is so huge and the detail's immaculate so you can't help but be awestruck by it. It looks so alien and surreal. So Kylie was really excited.

Her excitement was obviously different to mine though, as I'm a big fan of the series and she was just really excited to be acting in it. She knew Doctor Who through me but for her it was much more about getting back into acting. Just being part of such a quality production. It's like doing a film - the attention to detail and the shoot schedule and the quality of the finished product. In fact, it's a lot better than a lot of films. To do that in the time they have I think is incredible.

What did you make of Kylie's costume?

Loved it. When we first talked about doing it I wanted it to have quite an iconic look. As someone who works for Kylie, and as a huge Doctor Who fan, I obviously knew about the visual side to it and how the companions have looked and have been dressed in both the old and new series. So we had a few meetings with Louise Page the designer and it was just amazing. I was pleased that she looked kind of a bit out of time and not too contemporary. There's something nice about the way she looks, there's something foxy about her in the boots and the fishnets.

But Kylie would have a job not looking foxy even dressed as a waitress?

Ha, she's a bit of a foxy space waitress really.

How festive is the episode?

Even though it was July when we were filming, everything was quite magical and had that Christmassy energy. I took all the stills on set and on my last night down there after Kylie had gone, I was shooting the Tardis in a snowfield with the city behind it. It was a really freezing night and it just felt like Christmas Eve. Just seeing the Tardis covered in snow was so magical.

In the Christmas specials, the Doctor starts off and ends up alone and Russell T Davies sees that as important because a lot of people are on their own at Christmas. The Doctor is fundamentally alone.

What is the Doctor's relationship with Astrid like?

I think Astrid as a one-off companion is perfect. She's someone who is filled with wonder and she sees the Doctor as someone who can make anything possible. That wonder and that magic, the infinite possibilities of Doctor Who, is really evident in their relationship.
