Keanu Reeves signs for science-fiction remake
The Matrix star Keanu Reeves has signed up for a remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still
The most famous image from the classic 1950s science-fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still is of the expressionless silver robot standing beside a flying saucer. But instead Keanu is to play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who in the original film was played by Michael Rennie.

The original, directed by Robert Wise, was a heavily Cold War-themed movie with Klaatu stopping by to tell world leaders that if they persist in trying to kill each other, aliens will do the job for them. Presumably just to get some peace and quiet.

The new version updates to present-day terrorism themes and will be directed by Scott Derrickson, who helmed The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It's being rewritten by David Scarpa, best known for 2001's drama The Last Castle.
