DTR (digital television recorder) A video recorder for digital TV. (See also PVR.)

EPG (electronic programme guide) On-screen listings guide.

HDMI A cable and connector specially designed for high-definition video signals and high-quality sound. It gives the best results when used to connect an HDTV set-top box to an HD-ready TV.

High-definition TV HDTV pictures are much sharper than the current standard-definition pictures.

IDTV (integrated digital TV) A TV set with a built-in digital tuner (ie integrated Freeview with no need for a Freeview set-top box).

Interactive/"red button" service A service that lets you select on-screen information or extra video streams via your remote control.

PVR (personal video recorder) Another name for a digital television recorder.

Scart The standard 21-pin socket/lead (like this) for connecting audio-visual equipment such as TVs and set-top boxes.

625 lines The number of lines in a standard-definition display. A high-definition display has 1,080 lines and so is much sharper.

Streaming A TV programme played out over the internet.

Surround-sound A multichannel, multiple-speaker sound system for your living room, similar to those found in cinemas (only much smaller!).

USB A connecting socket found on most computers.

Viewing card slot A slot found on some Freeview set-top boxes that accepts a card that enables users to access subscription services.
