The Freeview logo
Freeview

Probably the cheapest and simplest way of going digital, Freeview gives you more than 40 channels with no subscription (but check that you can receive it in your area). All you need is a set-top box or an IDTV. And Freeview+ lets you record and pause live TV.

The Freesat logo
Freesat

Freesat's like Freeview but via a satellite dish (which means more people can get it). The BBC and ITV Freesat service offers 140+ channels but not all Freeview channels are on Freesat, so check your favourites are included. Sky also offers a Freesat service (see below).

The Top Up TV logo
Top Up TV

For £9.99 a month Top Up TV Anytime offers all the Freeview channels, plus around 150 extra programmes. In order to receive the service, you'll need a Top Up TV+ PVR (receiver and hard-disk recorder) costing about £100 and storing around 100 hours of programmes.

Setanta
Setanta

Setanta offers a sports channel in addition to Freeview for £10.99 a month. To receive this service, you'll need a Freeview set-top box with a viewing card slot or a card adaptor that plugs into the back of your digital television.

The Sky logo
Sky

As well as their main satellite service, Sky offers a Freesat service. For £150 you get a set-top box, dish, installation and over 230 channels. And Sky Multi-room allows you to use up to eight additional Sky set-top boxes throughout your home.

The Virgin Media logo
Virgin Media

Virgin offer a variety of digital cable packages featuring Sky and Freeview channels but you must have a Virgin phone line to get them. A unique selling point of the Virgin Media deals are that customers can watch the BBC's iPlayer service on TV.

The BT Vision logo
BT Vision

BT Vision offers a mix of Freeview channels and on-demand TV content, which can be viewed on a television rather than a computer. You need to be a BT Total Broadband customer to use the service.

Tiscali TV

Tiscali TV (formerly HomeChoice) also offers a mix of live and on-demand digital TV programmes for a monthly subscription fee.
