Composer

Bach - the greatest composer before Mozart, much loved for religious choral music.

Beethoven - a symphonic visionary who also wrote beguiling chamber music.

Brahms - a master of the symphony, concerto and chamber works.

Elgar - the musical voice of Edwardian England.

Mahler - one of the greatest symphonists ever.

Mozart - 18th-century genius with a vast and varied output.

Schubert - the finest of all Lieder (song) writers and the first great Romantic voice.

J Strauss (son) - the "Waltz King", known for his melodic dance music and operettas.

Tchaikovsky - famed for ballet scores, yearning operas, stirring symphonies and concertos.

Vaughan Williams - influential leader of the 20th-century revival in English music.


Soloist

Daniel Barenboim - pianist and conductor, famed for his marathon Beethoven recital series.

Alfred Brendel - a poet among pianists, embracing a huge repertoire.

James Galway - "The man with the golden flute", who so popularised the instrument.

Evelyn Glennie - dynamic percussionist who's deaf but "senses" sound through vibration.

Nigel Kennedy - maverick violinist who loves to jazz it up as well as play the classics.

Yehudi Menuhin - pre-eminent violin virtuoso of his day and a great teacher.

Anne-Sophie Mutter - protégée of Karajan, one of the great violinistas.

Jacqueline du Pré - magnificently soulful cellist whose career was tragically cut short.

Arthur Rubinstein - legendary Polish pianist, peerless Chopin interpreter.

John Williams - brilliant and adventurous classical and crossover guitarist.


Singer (male)

Roberto Alagna - honey-toned, Italian-French lyric tenor once dubbed "The Fourth Tenor".

Thomas Allen - leading British baritone with a warmly distinctive voice.

Andrea Bocelli - blind Italian tenor, and the world’s leading operatic crossover artist.

Jose Carreras - poetic Spanish tenor who became one of the Three Tenors.

Placido Domingo - the greatest singing actor of our time, and possibly the most versatile tenor in history.

Geraint Evans - Welsh baritone who led a British opera house invasion in the 60s.

Simon Keenlyside - the British baritone of the moment, famed as Billy Budd and Papageno.

Luciano Pavarotti - thrilling tenor, probably the most famous singer of the 20th century.

Bryn Terfel - Welsh bass baritone who's conquered the world as Figaro and Falstaff.

Russell Watson - "People's Tenor", who's sung his way from working men's clubs to Wembley.


Singer (female)

Janet Baker - probably the greatest British mezzo of the 20th century, a fine singing actress and recitalist.

Cecilia Bartoli - bubbly Italian high-flier, unforgettable in Mozart and Rossini.

Maria Callas - legendary American-Greek soprano and great singing actress.

Renée Fleming - great American soprano, particularly suited to the music of Richard Strauss.

Lesley Garrett - irrepressible English National Opera soprano and operatic populariser.

Angela Gheorghiu - Romanian soprano, with a voice that combines sweetness and intensity.

Katherine Jenkins - Welsh mezzo-soprano, also a great crossover success story.

Anna Netrebko - charismatic Russian soprano, widely perceived as today’s superstar diva.

Joan Sutherland - Australia's "La Stupenda", one of the great Bellini and Donizetti interpreters.

Kiri Te Kanawa - poised New Zealand soprano who smoothly embraced Mozart and Verdi.


Opera

The Barber of Seville - Rossini's sparkling comedy about that incorrigible crimper, Figaro.

La Boheme - Puccini's magnificent evocation of life in 19th-century Bohemian Paris.

Carmen - Bizet's torrid take on Spain, with some of the best-loved tunes in opera.

Madam Butterfly - Puccini's melodic tearjerker about an abandoned Japanese bride.

The Magic Flute - Mozart's spine-tingling operatic panto.

The Marriage of Figaro - Mozart's witty yet revolutionary masterpiece of wedding intrigue.

The Merry Widow - Lehar's sparkling confection remains one of the most popular operettas.

The Mikado - Gilbert and Sullivan's delightful Japanese spoof.

La Traviata - Verdi's majestic drama of blighted love, centring on courtesan Violetta.

Turandot - Nessundorma is just one highlight of Puccini’s exotic drama about an icy Chinese princess.


Film soundtrack

Born Free - John Barry's stirring score added extra poignancy to this true story.

Chariots of Fire - composer Vangelis's splendid hymn to the triumph of Olympic endurance.

The Dam Busters - Leighton Lucas's exhilarating score ensured that this RAF drama took off.

Doctor Zhivago - Lara's Theme by Maurice Jarre sets the tone for this sprawling Russian romance.

Lawrence of Arabia - Jarre's haunting music perfectly complemented David Lean's desert epic.

The Magnificient Seven - Elmer Bernstein's rousing music perfectly captured this lively western.

The Mission - a turbulent score from Ennio Morricone.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service - one of the finest of the Bond scores.

Star Wars - enduring score from John Williams, the king of the Hollywood blockbuster.

Vertigo - Bernard Herrmann's eerie music adds dizzy tension to Hitchcock's classic.
