Christmas drama
There's nothing better than drama at Christmas: the biggest names, the greatest stars, it's the time of the year when every channel brings us its best. Or has a very good go, anyway. Find out what's really worth watching in Radio Times's guide to Christmas drama treats.

Doctor Who
Don't even think of missing this. Geoffrey Palmer is Captain Smith, Kylie Minogue is a waitress, and the Titanic has just struck the Tardis. (BBC1)

The Shadow in the North
Time has passed since last year's The Ruby in the Smoke and Sally Lockhart (Billie Piper) thinks her troubles are behind her. Until a new one threatens everything she holds dear. (BBC1)
The Old Curiosity Shop
Charles Dickens's tragic tale of the virtuous Little Nell and her gambling grandfather stars Derek Jacobi, Zoë Wanamaker and Gina McKee. (ITV1)
Miss Austen Regrets
Olivia Williams plays the novelist herself, reflecting on a life bereft of the passion she bestowed upon her characters. (BBC1)

Ballet Shoes
Victoria Wood, Richard Griffiths and Harry Potter's Emma Watson star in Noel Streatfeild's magical bestseller about three orphans adopted by an eccentric explorer. (BBC1)

Christmas at the Riviera
One-off comedy drama set in a disaster-prone hotel on the English Riviera (anywhere near Torquay?). Pam Ferris, Warren Clarke and Alexander Armstrong star. (ITV1)

The Wooden Overcoat
Mark Gatiss adapts a stage play about a group of oddball characters in seedy 1950s London, starring Julia Davis and David Tennant. (BBC Radio 4)

Oliver Twist
The classic becomes a five-part drama, screened in the build-up to Christmas with Timothy Spall, Sarah Lancashire and Rob Brydon. (BBC1)

MR James at Christmas
An all-star cast including Derek Jacobi, Anton Lesser and Julian Rhind-Tutt in a five-part chiller, a series of ghost tales from MR James. (BBC Radio 4)
