Doctor Who's David Tennant is to play the lead in Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, a new comedy drama for America's NBC from the makers of Heroes and Life.

Rex Alexander (Tennant) is a lawyer in Chicago who has started suffering from panic attacks and, rather than continue to litigate himself, has instead taken to coaching clients to represent themselves in court.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the show has been in development for two years and that NBC "had been trying to find a lead actor for several months until Tennant came along and nailed the part."

No air date has been announced. But the pilot episode is being made with director David Semel from Heroes and Life, with Tennant executive producing alongside Barry Schindel, known for Law & Order, Numb3rs and new hit Castle.

Rex Is Not Your Lawyer is David Tennant's second high-profile US signing: he's also to appear as himself hosting PBS's Masterpiece Contemporary, a series that airs primarily British dramas.

Is that it, then? Have we lost one of our best actors to America? Will the Scotsman pull off an American accent the way he did an English one? Have your say here.

All the best to him, he's done work stateside before (L.A. without a map). Gives more opportunities for british actors to fly the flag for the UK in the states, is good to see. Will be missed on Doctor Who, but think this is a smart move for the likes of Hugh Laurie, Alex Kingston etc...

Promotes how creative and flexible our british actors/actresses can be and land more parts, watch out the Brits are coming hehe;)

We're not losing him as, if it's any good, it will be picked up by a UK boradcaster. Often the budgets mean that a US series can provide some financial stability and why shoudn't he get that. It's great for Mr Tennant and he'll doubtless fly the flag for all the British series that show on US tele whilst he's out there. Also, from a Doctor Who point of view it will give the new chap some time to settle in without David being all over the papers, all the time - media celeb that he now is. I wish him all the best (and hope he can keep a hole in his schedule for a DW 50th anniversary reunion special for November 2013)

Why do we keep losing our actors to America? We lost Hugh Laurie although it turned out for a good reason. We lost Damian Lewis and a few others.

Is says a lot for the state of British TV if we can't come up with tv dramas that keep them over here.

Is it only me who can't seem to appreciate the alleged brilliance of David Tennant? I find his over-exaggerated expressions supremely irritating. And hang on a second, one of our best actors? Really? Wow, I missed that memo for sure.
