Well-loved TV chef Keith Floyd, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in June, has died of a heart attack aged 65.

During a television career that began in 1985, Floyd - rarely seen without a glass of wine in hand - was known for his natural, often shambolic, style of presenting that helped make cooking more accessible to his viewers.

Floyd was also the first to take TV gastronomy out of the kitchen: his shows were often part travelogue and saw him preparing meals on beaches or city streets.

In a strangely prescient piece of television scheduling, Channel 4 last night screened Keith Meets Keith, a revealing documentary in which comic and actor Keith Allen tracked Floyd down to his home in rural France - where he found him characteristically outspoken.

Floyd was particularly critical of today's celebrity chefs, claiming, "They've all been seduced by TV… All they can do is assemble pieces of gastronomic Lego without having the faintest idea where they f***ing come from."

However, one fellow chef Floyd has cited as both a friend and respected colleague is Marco Pierre White, who said today, "I don't know another man who has done what he has done… He was a natural cook. But his very special talent was he could articulate himself and deliver inspiration with words. He spoke in a way that everybody could understand… A little piece of Britain died yesterday, which will never be replaced."

Keith Floyd was the first person who made good cooking look accessible and lots of fun. He was an inspiration.
