Actor, dancer and singer Patrick Swayze has died following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
His career, which began in the late 1970s, included roles on television's M*A*S*H and North and South before 1987's Dirty Dancing made him a film star. It was followed in 1990 by the hit romance Ghost and Swayze continued to act up until this year. His final starring role was in American TV series The Beast, which ended in April.
Dirty Dancing co-star Jennifer Grey said: "Patrick was a rare and beautiful combination of raw masculinity and amazing grace. Gorgeous and strong, he was a real cowboy with a tender heart. He was fearless and insisted on always doing his own stunts, so it was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified."
Rob Lowe, who co-starred with Swayze in films including 1986's Youngblood, said: "Patrick lived a thousand lifetimes in one. He was an expert dancer, he wrote hit songs, he starred in hit movies."
It was a varied career, taking in music success, too, with his single She's like the Wind. He told Radio Times in 2004 that "I've always been searching for something more to this movie stardom. Each time I've had the option I've always gone in the opposite direction. If I was interested in the cash I would have taken the $10m they offered me for a piece-of-crap sequel to Dirty Dancing.
"All the different philosophies I've studied have made me realise we're all after the same thing - we're just coming at it from different angles. I've gravitated to Eastern philosophy. I love the concept that God's already inside you and it's your job to manifest it."
Swayze's publicist Annett Wolf announced the star's death, saying he had died with his family at his side.

I have no idea what he was like as a person, but always think of him as the dreamy, gorgeous, very sexy, loving and gentle person he played in Dirty Dancing, which was a very special movie for me. Thank you, Patrick, for the very warm feeling that engendered in me.

What a great guy, sad to see him go. Liked his thoughts on Eastern philosophies, we could learn a thing or too from Patrick, god rest his soul!
