Big Brother's Best Bits: week 13

Earlier this week, Charlie, Rodrigo, Siavash and Sophie had a chance to make BB history - and they blew it. Confronting Big Brother in the diary room, they explained that they all wanted to leave. For a tantalising moment it looked as if it really might happen. But in the end it only took Big Brother's request "to think very carefully about this" for their resolve to crumble.
What a shame. As the housemates teetered on a knife-edge decision, the producers must have held their breath, imagining the prospect of a final week with nothing but footage of David and Lisa sitting at the bus stop drinking tea and smoking, and a finale where even Davina's breathless enthusiasm would have been tested to the limit trying to hype up a limp contest between just two contestants.
It would have been a fitting end to the series during which Channel 4 announced it was axing the show. And the housemates who walked would have had a genuine claim to fame - subverting reality TV through people power. Were some of them just too keen to have their shot at the prize? Or maybe they simply couldn't bear to give up so close to the end. Either way, the final five faced the final week together.
So which of them should win? On balance, I think it should be Sophie. At least when everyone else has been fighting or moaning or moping, we've had Sophie - not deliberately trying to be a ray of sunshine, artificially injecting laughter into proceedings - but just being herself, funny and fun and a little bit farty.
Why not Siavash? I think he's been a great housemate, entertaining and intelligent. I love the fact that he doesn't care what he looks like - and I don't just mean sartorially. It takes a real man not to worry about his masculinity, to scream with abandon when faced with spiders or heights - and footage of him snogging Noirin.
But perhaps that's a reason to give it to Sophie over Siavash - his tryst with Noirin in front of his girlfriend, and two million viewers. It must have seemed pretty horrific when he was forced to watch it back - twice - especially with Sophie's brilliantly hammy performance in the lead role making it sound like a scene from a bad soap opera.
But unlike many people, I believe Siavash has been honest pretty much throughout. I wonder if his second attempt to leave - to atone for his sins - will change the minds of those who think he's following the dreaded game plan. I suppose they will see it as an attempt to make amends to the public rather than his ex-girlfriend - after all, he didn't leave, did he? For me, it rang true. I could see he really wanted to go but I believed him, too, when he said, "This house is like a drug. I'm addicted to it. It's so hard to give up."
Whatever the reason, I'm glad he stayed. As Rodrigo put it, "the party is not the same without Siavash". With that in mind, bring on tonight's final bash!
