Bea from Big Brother dressed as Frankenstein's monster

Biggest rejection

"I know, I'll send a message to my good friend Bea in the Big Brother house! She's been having a tough time recently. This is bound to cheer her up. I mean, I know I'm not her mum, or her sister Lianne, or her 12th cousin five times removed, but still…"

And if Bea's friend Tea (are they part of a gang, with other members called Lee and Dee?) felt rejected after her video message was snubbed, what about David? He and Bea had been "getting on like a house on fire", he thought. He'd given her hugs when she was feeling down and pep talks when she thought others were against her - and then she goes and nominates him. She's "ripped out my heart and stamped on it". You can't blame him for feeling rejected, can you..?

The thing is, David can't really complain that Bea has abused a genuine friendship - one based on shared interests or a common outlook on life. It's more that she has failed to respect a political alliance. And since nominations are about coming up with personal reasons for choosing someone, the two aren't really related.

But isn't being nice to someone in public then pointing out things you don't like about them in private being two-faced? Well, yes and no.

For a start, the diary room isn't private - they're on TV, so nowhere is - and if Bea is half as "cunning" as many people seem to think, she can't have missed that. Also, deciding not to vocalise everything you think about someone every time you think it is not being two-faced, it's just how society works. People who go on about being up front and telling people things "to their faces", a) invariably don't and b) shouldn't - it's nasty.

I don't know though, I do find myself playing devil's advocate to some extent when I talk about Bea. She's far from perfect (I could list her faults, but I don't want to be the 19 millionth person on the internet to do it), yet I do think there is a lot to like about her. She does amuse me and I do kind of admire her dogmatic streak, even though half the time I'm wincing at it. I enjoy her banter with Marcus, too - she's the only one smart enough to properly engage with him. Either way, I think the volume of bile people are spewing in her direction is a bit out of proportion, that's all.

Best present

Speaking of which, it must have been a gift for many people to see Bea dressed as the monster they think she is, and strapped to a table receiving electric shocks - the victim in a real-life game of Operation. She was just lucky they didn't put the viewers in charge - the voltage would have been turned up to 11.

I suppose Bea will go tonight, which will at least mean we'll be able to talk about someone else next week. I think it's fair to say it won't be pretty when she steps outside the front door. In a series of increasingly flaccid viewing figures, Bea must be a godsend to Channel 4 and tonight's show could well get the best figures of the series so far. It won't be much of a consolation to Bea, but at least in that sense she'll be going out on a high.
