Filming began today on the new series of Doctor Who, with fans getting their first on-set glimpse of Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith and his companion Amy Pond, played by Scottish actress Karen Gillan.

Smith has his work cut out for him, replacing the much-loved David Tennant in the role, while Gillan follows in a long line of female companions, most recently including Billie Piper and Catherine Tate. As Amy, she will first meet the Time Lord in episode one of the new 13-part series.

Also new to the job is Stephen Moffat, who takes over as showrunner from Russell T Davies. As a writer on the series, Moffat penned some of the most memorable episodes since its return in 2005, including the Bafta-winning episode Blink. As lead writer and executive producer, he will now be responsible for the overall creative direction of the show, as well as plot and character arcs.

A thrilled Moffat said, "And here it is, the big moment - the new Doctor, and his new best friend. And here's me, with the job I wanted since I was seven. Forty years to here!

"Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way - and best of all, somewhere out there, a seven-year-old is going to see them, fall in love, and start making a 40 year plan…"

Matt Smith also shared his excitement at joining the series. "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show. The scripts are brilliant and working alongside Karen, Steven and the rest of the crew is an inspiration because their work ethic and passion for the show is so admirable. I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

The new series follows three Doctor Who specials starring David Tennant, set to air later this year.

2 regeneration's left? What was I thinking of? I did say this could go geeky.

I am still looking forward to the new series anyway, and maybe a Captain Jack recovery as well?

So many story threads to take up and new lines to go on. I cannot wait

First, there are two regenerations left. Barry White has miscounted. Second, those people moaning about bow ties and the colour of the TARDIS have completely missed the point. If that's all they watch the show for, they won't be missed. Thirdly, more Doctor Who in the Radio Times, not less.

A bow tie - you can not be serious. Major costume disaster pending

I was looking forward to seeing a new Doctor take ove the TARDIS, but seeing the new TARDIS has completely turned me off. Who thought there was a need for a new shade of blue, and new dimensions so it is now slightly bigger from the outside. Adding a new sonic screwdriver, a new Doctor, a new companion and a new head writer, combined with the new appearence of the TARDIS is, in my mind, completely re-starting the show, not just re-casting the main role.

Although I love Dr Who, could you stop making RadioTimes a Dr Who magazine when the new series is broadcasted, if not, rename RT!!!

I am looking forward to the new series! And I think the new Doctor/Companion pairing is fantastic.

There are lots of people far too willing to pour cold water on it before it even airs, because they fear the change. But Doctor Who has always been about changing faces and embracing the new; New Doctor, new companions, new planets, new threats, change is fundamental to the show.

The prospect is very exciting. To see how the regeneration goes about and how to explain the time war (this could get very geeky) and how to keep a time lord going for 40 of our years with only 1 regeneration left.

I suspect a amount of suspension of the real world will have to go on, just like in the theater.
