Doctor Who special The Waters of Mars heads up the new season of dramas coming to BBC1 this autumn. Lindsay Duncan stars alongside David Tennant, as Adelaide, head of the Mars Base, and one of the Time Lord's sharpest and most strong-willed companions yet.

There's a return for MI5 drama Spooks and some dramatic new storylines in EastEnders, while Maxine Peake stars alongside Matthew Macfadyen and Sophie Okonedo in a second series of Criminal Justice, which exposes the workings of the British legal system.

Brand-new dramas include sci-fi Paradox, in which Tamzin Outhwaite plays a Minority Report-style futuristic cop who prevents crimes before they've been committed; Emma, a four-part adaptation of Jane Austen's comic masterpiece; and Material Girl, described as "adventures in life, love and fashion".

You can watch clips of all these new dramas in the video preview below.

Meanwhile, BBC1 has unveiled details of its wider autumn schedule. Comedy highlights include the return of Gavin & Stacey - with the couple moving to Barry Island - and Big Top, an upbeat comedy set in a travelling circus, starring Amanda Holden as ringmistress Lizzie, alongside John Thomson, Tony Robinson and Ruth Madoc.

The entertainment schedule will see the return of Strictly Come Dancing - with former winner Alesha Dixon replacing Arlene Phillips as the new judge - as well as new series for Jonathan Ross, Graham Norton, QI and Total Wipeout, and a brand-new quiz As Seen on TV, hosted by Steve Jones.

Factual highlights include Around the World in 80 Days, in which pairs of celebrities including The Apprentice's Nick Hewer and Saira Khan, and Myleene Klass and John Barrowman, attempt to re-enact the epic odysseys of Phileas Fogg.

In Jimmy's Food Factory, young farmer Jimmy Doherty investigates the science behind mass-produced food. And natural history series Life offers some TV firsts as it documents extreme animal behaviour.

In sport, BBC1 is bolstering its current football offering of Match of the Day's Premiership highlights with The Football League Show, a new Saturday-night programme showcasing all the goals from the Championship, League One and League Two.
