Yes, Gene Hunt will be firing up the Quattro for one last time!

1980s-set time-shift police drama Ashes to Ashes, starring Philip Glenister as the no-nonsense copper, will return for a third and final series in 2010, and the producers are promising further fireworks - and are even hinting at a possible return for Sam Tyler (John Simm's character in the original series, Life on Mars).

Co-creator Ashley Pharoah said: "We are as excited as the viewers to see how Alex's (Keeley Hawes) journey ends and we promise the third series will be packed full of intriguing twists and turns to keep viewers guessing about the final outcome."

Meanwhile, executive producer Simon Crawford Collins has suggested the series will address some key questions: "Will Alex make it back home? Why is she living in this parallel 80s world? What will become of bullish Gene Hunt? And will we ever discover what actually happened to Sam Tyler..? Viewers will not be left disappointed because the series promises to finish with a bang!"

So, on a scale of one to ten, how excited are you about the prospect of a third series of Ashes to Ashes, complete with an explanation of the weird world of Gene Hunt? Post a comment below and let us know.

I also can't wait to see how it all turns out,i'd also like to see a fourth series where Gene Hunt jumps from the 70's to 2010/11. I'm sure there was a tv film like this in the 80's where a guy from the 60's jumps into the 80's and a guy from the 80's jumps to the 60's,if anyone knows this please write the title here.

A2A is proving there really is Life after Mars but Sam really needs to come back. There is too much riding on the success of the series not to have Sam make a reappearance. The yanks made a big mistake having them all end up on a rocket to Mars. Just keep this great British drama coming - we need it down here in OZ. Go Genie!!!

A2A is alright, but i definitely prefer Life on Mars. John Simm was brilliant in it, and i would really love it if Sam Tyler came back! And maybe we'll find out what happened to Annie as well?

I'm hoping Sam will return, i think it would be a relief for Alex and i think its likely because when Ray said he crashed his car into the river he said the body was never found. So maybe he's not dead! I'm so excited about the third series, can't live without the Gene Genie, and there are soo many questions we want answered roll on 2010!

I would love to hear confirmation of Sam Tyler's experience that his reality was actually the 1970s as carefully explained in the last episode of that series. The problem then is how he could meet his parents and his 'old' house. It was explained in the last episode that when he 'awoke' back in 2006? that in fact that was the true coma. Convincingly explained by his lack of pain during that board meeting. That series was well written. Ashes left more questions. Please bring back Sam Tyler.

Kurt - Have you seen our Keeley Hawes photo gallery? It might help soften the blow of the end of Ashes to Ashes series two...

Rather than bringing Keely back to 2010, can't I go and join her in the 1980's? Sigh.

The ending of this series was a real twist and I can hardly wait for the next series - but my life is now complete after hearing Gene Hunt yell the words "What do you want from me Jenette?" Hang on...I have a list!! [yes I know it's different spelling but he still yelled my name!!!] Oh boy....

I was disappointed with series two, over all, so I can only hope that series three will be livelier and answer ALL the un-answered questions.

11/10. I can't help wondering if they're all stuck in the 80s from the future? maybe not all of them know it, but it would certainly be a twist and a half.... definately gonna be good if sam tyler reappears....
