The BBC has revealed that 21-year-old Karen Gillan will be the lucky companion joining Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith in the Tardis when the next full series of Doctor Who starts next spring.

As she prepares to begin filming this summer, a clearly enthusiastic Gillan said, "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him - I just can't wait to get started!"

Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added, "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Piers Wenger, head of drama BBC Wales, echoed the praise for up-and-coming star Gillan: "Karen brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special. It is a partnership that is ready to take on the universe!"

The world of Doctor Who is not entirely new to Gillan, who played a soothsayer in series four episode The Fires of Pompeii. Her previous roles include parts in Scottish crime drama Rebus, alongside Ken Stott, and short-lived ITV1 drama Harley Street. If you missed her in any of those, then you can catch her performance in forthcoming supernatural thriller Outcast, starring James Nesbitt.

Do you think Karen is the right choice for the new companion? Post a comment below and tell us what you think.

Karen is a brilliant choice and if the BBC are doing a programme with her beforehand, they must know she's good. Let's make our minds up after The Well on Saturday, eh?

A new Dr Who needs a new direction and why not a young companion? If they want contrast the directors could always enlist Peter Purvis in a strange story line to rival even the X files.

Those younger than black and white tv should look him up.

I hope they do well. I am always nervous when someone new turns up, but I trust in the people behind doctor who. I hope she is more like Donna though. I prefer companions when they are friends with the doctor instead of madly in love with him. The madly in love part just gets annoying. I wish the new Doctor had eyebrows though…

what? is she twelve? Doctor who went from a silly little 15 minute kids program to a serious 1 hour drama. I suppose that was expensive..time to go back to the rubbish it once was and only have followers under 10..oh well..the economy is tight.

Redhead, eh? Could this be a young River Song? That'd be cool.

Not every Mum will stop watching Who because David Tennant has gone. Give the new lad a chance...Interesting choice of new assistant. I wish her well.

She may well be excellent - but given the choice of a boy-Doctor in place of the gorgeous David Tennant I won't be watching anyway. Sorry BBC you may attract a few young viewers, but you've lost the mums.
