Last year Radio Times revealed that digital channel Dave was planning to make new Red Dwarf episodes: now find out what's really happening - and when.
Red Dwarf: Back to Earth is a new two-part special airing from Friday 10 April at 9:00pm on Dave. The title's not a gag and it's not a reference to the long-awaited return of this popular show: instead, Dave Lister is truly returning to his home planet. "When Lister's busy day of annoying Rimmer is interrupted by a monstrous attack, it's pretty much business as usual - until a shock development throws Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten back to planet Earth "
While there's no official word yet of either Hattie Hayridge or Norman Lovett returning as the computer, Holly, the rest of the cast is definitely back. Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn have previously worked together on readthroughs of the aborted Red Dwarf film project. But now they reunite with co-creator and director Doug Naylor to begin filming on 16 February.
The long Easter weekend is when you'll see both parts of Back to Earth, plus a behind-the-scenes special and Unplugged: try to picture something like An Audience with Red Dwarf. All we're promised for this so far is "no sets, no effects and no autocue".
Red Dwarf is Dave's first scripted comedy show and it's part of the channel's new move into original programming, which has seen the creation of debate comedy Argumental and the return of John Cleese to British TV in Batteries Not Included.
What do you think? Have they been successful? Is the return of Red Dwarf the best news in the world - or does it just make you shrug? And what's going on with Holly?

Its great news that Red Dwarf is coming back & it sounds like the writers & production team are going back to the things that made RD good in the old days, they've taken out Chloe Annette & they have removed the original crew & have gone back to the four guys stuck together on Star Bug I'm really pleased about this, Lister annoying Rimmer & the Cat & Kryten playing their supporting roles Red Dwarf is all about being stranded with people you cannot stand but because of the difficult situation you have to grin & bear it make the best of it & thats were all of RD's best comedy comes from, those exact situations I think we'd all agree Lister is a likeable but slobby, lazy jack the lad who would annoy us at times & Rimmer is a total Smeg Head whos trying his best to no avail he has a heart & can show a nice side but when things start to get better he makes a mess of things & we hate him even more, welcome back guys from the Dwarf! Lets hope there is a proper new series following on from this & lets hope if they do make one its more like series IV & V rather then VII & VIII although I did enjoy some parts of series 8 but overall it wasnt great.

Fantastic News !!!!!!!
I only hope there is some logic for the 10 year gap and a reason why they finally get back to earth, I hope it encourages Dave to comission a new Red Dwarf .

Red dwarf has been one of my favorite comedys of all time (since being ten and showing it to my english speaking fench friends...who didnt really get it) I hope its as funny as the others and gives the characters some new situationg...rather than being a re-hashing of other sitcom ideas....if its not some fish out of water rubbish (though I doubt it as lister being a guide to the others) It WILL be brilliant

I hope it's better than the Star Trek Enterprise or Voyager attempts at 'Return to Earth'. What kind of Earth is it going to be 3 million years into the future, when Lister is supposed to be the last human being alive?

I Personally can't wait for it's return...have loved the show since it originally aired on the bbc. Well done Dave, as they've finally done something the beeb hasn't been able to and that's put a great show back on tv, even if it is just a two-part special. However I have to disagree with Rob's earlier comment, I would like to see Kochanski back in the show, the character was just starting to develop in season 8 and I'm interested to see how the writers would develop her character further.....you know whether she comes to the conclusion that she cannot change dave and the crew and joins in with the humor or whether some headway is made to change dave but causes even more rifts in the crew like you saw between Kochanski and Kryten when Kochanski first joined in Season 7.

Well done Dave, we wait with baited breath. Danny (below) makes the point well, the show was always at it's best with the core cast and it's adolescent humour. Can't wait!!!

Bring it on. Even a rubbish episode of Red Dwarf is better than most (so called) comedies out there. And maybe, just maybe it could be a return to their best. Remember form is temporary class is permanent

Weey! I love this show and im looking forward to these specials, lets just hope New Kochansky is not in them because thats a terrible character just there incase they made a movie. I dont like people who moan about change in comedy shows but having her in it was a terrible move, it was like they were specificaly aiming the show at an audience for once and it made so much less enjoyable.

Red Dwarf while not brilliant is still good entertainment and I welcome it's return. I like it because it reminds me of the early nineties

I agree with Danny, please let it have the format of the earlier episodes, series 3 or 4 would be perfect.
My main problem with the last series was the canned laughter, it was really off putting.

While I think this show's day is gone (hunour has moved on quite a bit) it would be a welocome back if they keep to the original format, and not the unfunny last series which saw a female take a lead role. Perhaps it was to broaden the audience, but it alienated fans of the original boyish humour that made it popular. We shall see, but I think this is difficult to call whether it's hit or miss.
