Former EastEnder Michelle Ryan is to star alongside David Tennant in the Doctor Who Easter special Planet of the Dead.

Ryan, most recently seen in Bionic Woman and Merlin, seems to have developed a taste for sci-fi and fantasy, and will play the mysterious Lady Christina de Souza. She said, "I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who and very excited to be joining David Tennant and the Doctor Who team."

The story is being kept under wraps, of course, but we do know that Lady Christina will join The Doctor on a bus trip that takes an unexpected detour into danger. Whopremo Russell T Davies revealed, "Lady Christina is a woman with a mysterious past who's going to have a huge impact on the Doctor."

Comedian Lee Evans is also set to star in the episode, while Noma Dumezweni will reprise her role as Captain Erisa Magambo, last seen alongside Billie Piper and Catherine Tate in series-four episode Turn Left.

Meanwhile, fans are wondering whether starring with Tennant in Planet of the Dead will rule Ryan out of becoming a full-time companion to either Tennant or his successor Matt Smith.

How would you feel if Michelle Ryan did turn out to be The Doctor's next permanent sidekick? And if you can't see her alongside Matt Smith, who do you think should be his first companion? Post a comment below and let us know.

Does the companion have to be female now? There used to be male companions back in the day. Might make an interesting change to the dynamic.

Having seen her in some of the Bionic Women, I think she would make an excellent side-kick to the Doctor

I assume only 'nice ' comments will be chosen in the grand BBC tradition.

Bring back Chris Ecclestone - the original Doctors were much older but have become younger as time goes by. What's next - getting a foetus to play the Doctor- Will a younger Doctor make it easier to sell to the youth obsessed Americans?

I know this may sound a bit "off the wall" but I was impressed by Ulrika Jonsson in Celebrity Big Brother recently.Clearly she is very popular with the public so she might make a good companion for the Doctor. Also Vern Troyer showed he could be an outside bet for Davros now he is over here.

I want David Tennant to stay not the Matt Smith, David Tennant is such a brilliant actor! Matt Smith is too young and eyebrowless.

I think it would be a fantastic bit of casting. Considering her recent performances she'd have that light and shade to her that Freema Agyeman lacked.

I reckon Michelle would be an excellent travelling companion for The Doctor. The quality of her character and the nature of their relationship is down to Moffat and co, but I think we can trust them to get it right. Michelle's been a bit unlucky with bionic woman not fullfilling expectations and her character in Merlin is poorly underwritten. She has shown plenty of skill in previous roles to warrant her place in such a high profile series.
