Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise is to appear on Jonathan Ross's comeback show, along with Stephen Fry and Lee Evans - but it's the host, not the guests, that everyone will be watching.

Friday Night with Jonathan Ross returns to BBC1 on 23 January after Ross's suspension, and experts are not sure "Sachsgate" is really behind him.

"I think Ross is going to find it pretty unbearable," BBC presenter Mark Lawson told Radio Times. "So I think it will quickly suit both parties to find a way for him to leave the BBC."

Radio 2 DJ Paul Gambaccini disagrees: "The controversy could help Jonathan. He's a sharp cookie."

But it won't be critics or colleagues who decide Ross's fate: it'll be you. Should Jonathan Ross be back and bold as ever? Or is time up for the risqué host? Post a comment below and tell us what you think.

It is a disgrace that Simon Dee who was NEVER unpopular with the PUBLIC was just sacked & ruined & Ross can commit virtual murder & the B.B.C. continue to throw obscene money at him though many viewers dont want him back & find him too offensive

I wish they would get rid of him on the friday night show and try and find someone who is a bit more of a gentleman and not so brash and tacky, a bit more like Parky only a bit younger. There must be someone who can be charismatic and respectful at the same time. Ross is very charismatic but just lacks the respect of himself and others, sorry Ross!

Glad he's back, Friday night's and saturday mornings' weren't the same. I think he's worth every penny and my only complaint is that the BBC wouldn't give me a 3 month rebate on the time he was off the air.

Jonathon Ross is a big star in my book. He is a very funny and comic man. The Sachsgate affair was very regrettable and should not have been aired or worst of all happened at all. But the mans career should not be ruined because of that. I look forward to him every Friday night anyway!!

There are some prissy & age related (immature) comments here; People should switch off in this case if they don`t like; There are far worse offences going on towards the puplic; J.R. -though I agree paid too much & so is anybody at that amount- apologized & would have realized he was beyond himself ..I thought it appropriate that he was suspended, but pleased that he is back; Though obviously not everyone likes his style or approach he is mostly entertaining & appealing to a wide variety of different types of people.

What a fuss - yes it wasn't his finest hour or telephone call. He has apologised for it. Lets move on with lots more of Jonathan Ross, lets face it he is one of very few very good entertainers on the Box these days and he is the best by a mile. The BBC and TV in general would be a much much poorer place without him around.

For goodness sake, Jill! Much as I like JR (and I do think the whole sachsgate business has been a ridiculous waste of time, hardly compares with Gaza, and the family should look to themselves before blaming their woes on the BBC) I do actually prefer Danny Baker on Saturday morning Radio 2! Can't the BBC give him a slot: if they can't bring themselves to replace JR, perhaps he could take over on Saturday afternoons... or Sunday afternoons, which is still stuck in the 1970s. Danny Baker's show (even with the number man's daughter, who was actually quite good with DB) was the best thing on the radio for ages. actually listened to the whole show each week... just like I used to with JR years ago.

The point that seems to be missed here, is that Jonathan Ross's show is so popular BECAUSE of its host, Jonathan Ross.

It is precisely that over-the-top risque quality that makes JR what he is and that makes viewers tune in to his show. The people that don't like his style of humour do not watch his show. I doubt the majority of people that do like his style of humour will have been put off by a more overt display of it as regards the telephone call.

Goodluck Jonathan

As a 75 year old, I find Jonathon Ross, very entertaining most of the time, but when you are at the cutting edge of humure or comments, there are bound to be some step overs, that goes with the territory. It would be a very sad day when the critics get there way and Jonathon has to part from the BBC. KEEP JONATHON ON THE BBC.

I LUV JRs Friday night show and I am glad he is back.

Sad to see so many misguided, begruding, small minded comments. Something slightly tyranical and hysterical about some responses. Makes you wonder where this country is headed.....

Andrew who? Good how this little man has suddenly appeared in loads of current TV shows all of a sudden isn't it? Wonder if all the directors refer to him as "Manuel" while he's filming?

Well done JR. More power to you. You are hilarious :)

Is it not time for change? JR has the skills to review films but that about it now. Class he has not. When there is real talent on the show he's so out of his depth. And he gets nothing out of the quieter guests - sometimes it's quite embarrassing. It is not obvious how over-rated and over-paid he is? The sooner he goes the better. I haven't watched for over a year - he does nothing new.

Can someone explain the disparity in success between the vastly over-rated Jonathon and the criminally under-rated Paul Ross. I know the latter does rubbish telly but that's all he gets offered. He has the same sharp brain as his brother and also knows where to draw the line as far as taste is concerned. Jonathon behaves like an overgrown teenager desperate to show off and be 'edgy'.Unfortunately there are too many ex public school lickspittles at the BBC willing to indulge him and throw truckloads of cash in his direction.

And dont even mention Russell Brand. He's such a fake talent.I wish he WOULD leave and inflict his own brand of unfunny humour on the Americans.

Luckily there are many more who appreciate your talents do keep up the good work and what a wonderful A List of Guests for your first show back! Just marvellous!

I heed the advice of your bloggers and don't watch this vulgar man or listen to his radio show. I have tried to like his programmes but they do not work for me at all. BUT I cannot help but read the newspapers who write about his comeback and the ghastly things he is still saying. Why on earth is he still employed by the BBC. Let him go to another channel. There are plenty of folks like me who would be glad to see the back of him. I am glad his book did badly over Christmas. Hitting this guy in the pocket is the only thing he will understand and take heed of.

I am writing to congratulate you on your return to your BBC Friday Night Jonathan Ross show. I was one of the millions who tuned in to watch you do what the nation likes you best for: ENTERTAINMENT! Well done on Friday 23rd and what a fabulous opening - You did what you had to do in professionalism, style and meaning. I loved your opulent line up of guests and your unmistakable brand of humour and banter. It's SO great to have you back with us and I wish you all the best over the next few months of shows.

We are huge fans of Ross the intelligent and funny presenter. He has made Film 200X his own and his interview with Ricky Gervaise was the best we've seen, showing both men as serious but humorous adults with something interesting to say. There are plainly many people who enjoy the wacky Ross but frankly at 47 he is too old to go around trying to shock people with stupid utterances and rude words, and too talented to need to. We watched his return to Friday night last night and it was excellent, no gratuitous swearing and no less funny for that. Plenty of embarrassment for the guests, especially Tom Cruise, who took it all very well, and there were lots of laugh-out-loud moments. Well done, Jonathan, and welcome back.

Can't wait. And I'm also very pleased that the remarkable Stephen Fry is one of his guests tonight. It appears that he is willing to give Jonathan another chance, and all those people with skewed & ill-informed opinions should learn from him. Also, just in case you weren't aware, there is a large button on your TV that can be pressed at your convenience, if a programme is not to your taste. Oh, and another thing. I am happy to offer my entire TV licence fee to Jonathan & Brucie - they make BBC1 for me.

I found programmes like Last of the Summer Wine inane and a waste of taxpayers' money but I never complained because I realised that people have different tastes. That is what the BBC has to do - find programmes that appeal to the palate of all their viewers. I didn't watch LOTSW (unless I was stuck at my parents)so if you find Jonathon Ross offensive (and there are times even I cringe) then JUST DON'T WATCH!!! It really is that simple........

I repeat.... Risque? When Mr Ross laughs we all have a little chuckle don't we? He's a smart chap, with a fairly good taste in most things (some of those b movies need to be addressed) so let him do his 'thang'. If the Beeb wanna stifle him there's a 100 others that wont. Hopefully.

this allowing of ross back on the telly is another example of the bbc's complete insensitivity and lack of respect for the public, is this what i am paying my fees for, some egotistical t**t to prance about on my tellybox? we should ditch the bbc and go with proper programming like itv in the daytime, which is sensitive and watchable by all.

Welcome back Jonathon, I do hope that he is not censored and kept on a tight rein, half the fun of his shows are the fact that he sometimes says out loud what the rest of us are thinking and gets the guests to entertain and not just plug there newest venture. He has paid the price and I am sure learned the lesson, 'Sachsgate' will only disappear when it is not mentioned every time Ross or Brand are in the same sentence. Good luck Jonathon.

Let us people who do find him funny enjoy his return and b****r off. Everyone's opinion is different some people are going to like him and some aren't. Its the same with EVERY OTHER SHOW so get over it and move on.

I've watched most of Mr Ross' Friday night shows due to Jools Holland (and there's a real show) starting afterwards. I've sometimes enjoyed it but Mr Ross does seem to want to ridicule those guests who are obviously on the show to promote their latest endeavour, whilst really sucking up to A-list celebrities. He's manipulative and coarse, although he can sometimes be sardonic. That he went along with Mr Brandt's little 'joke' does say a lot about his character, or lack of it. He probably doesn't want to be another 'Parky', nor could he, but we need someone who can bring the best out of their guests, not satisfy their own inflated egos.

JR is a good example of an egotistical yob, Alexander McQueen clearly showed JR in his true colours, an inept, juvenile, lacking any presentation skills and relying on smut and innuendo to massage his own ego. JR should go, the quicker the better.

  • Posted on 21 January 2009

  • by John

I've gone off JR over the years, yes he has a quick mind and can be funny but he likes the sound of his own voice far too much. He's more interested in getting a laugh from something he's said then getting the best from his guests. I've lost count of the people he's been rude and smutty too and I wonder how often a guest leaves the studio thinking "what was that about" "what a waste of time!" JR is better suited to radio but local or commercial radio. On Television he shows a distinct lack of respect, is rude and condesending. He's often incredible rude in the studio when the cameras are not running. BBC management is far too scared to get rid of him. So what if he goes elsewhere - let him. BBC management need to wake up to the reality that he's not worth having. I wonder if Ross will have reflected on his time away from the studio and become a better person? Somehow I doubt it.

To be honest I think that no one really ever found him funny and the unfortunate incident with Mr Sachs just gave everyone a chance to express this. His how has always been about him, not the people he's interviewing. Bring back Parky!

Jonathon Ross did use to be funny. His last very funny show was when Johnny Vegas and Jim carrey took over the stage, 4 or 5 years ago, and it was genuinely hilarious. Since then he has run out of ideas and resorted to smut which makes a great many of his female guests uncomfortable which does not make good viewing. Also, when he interviewed Joe Calzaghe he tried to be smart and condescending to a true sporting champion and when he was mildy rebuked just ran out of things to say. I think that JR should now be retired gracefully simply due to the fact that he ran out of steam some time ago and with only a few exceptions only get guests on his show who are his mates, women he can be rude to or guests who are uninteresting or disinterested. Get someone who is interesting, eloquent, a genuinley good interviewer and probes guests rather than insulting them. Jeremy Clarkson comes to mind as the very man...

Ross is a total juvenile prat, who for some reason seems to think that swearing is somehow clever and funny.

He should go, and somebody else (who doesn't think that their voices should be louder than the person they are interviewing) could take his place.

He should then be forced to sit in front of a screen, and watch endless re-runs of Parkinson, a TRUE master, and can then learn how it should be done.

Most people have missed the fact that everything that he says is scripted. All the controversy is rehearsed.

He is a bad example to have on television because of his cheap comments and bad diction. We seem to be inundated with fourth rate presenters at present. vis Norton to say but one.

Jonathan Ross is a sad middle aged specimen of a man. His crude humour is starting to make him look a bit pathetic. Anyone who could think that it might be remotely funny to say what he did about Andrew Sachs and his grand-daughter whether in private or on air has a really cruel streak. But then, it's obvious he has one. When Daniel Craig was on the programme it was absolutely cringe makeing the way he wouldn't let him say anything serious at all and then virtually 'stole' his watch from him. Then swiftly disguising this as an act of charity that made him look good by saying we'll auction it for Children in Need. Jonathan, grow up.

I for one will not be watching his show anymore. I already felt that it was becoming all about him. He didn't really want to listen to his guests, merely make cheap comments at them, and for the most part make them feel uncomfortable. I agree with others that Live at The Apollo made far better viewing. I think Jonathon Ross has got far too big an ego for his ever decreasing talent.

I thoroughly agree with 'Marmite' on his attitude towards women. I used to like Ross, I even bought and read his new autobiography (was good, not great) but seeing worried Eva (not that I like her, I personally thinks she's a bad actress) on his show kind of creeped me out. However I do look forward to seeing Tom Cruise, a real great thespian, reacts to JR.

Jonathan Ross is no better or worse than any other chat show host take away the language. I expect as things are these days his knighthood's in the post. Whatever we the viewers say it'll be up to the Old Pals Act that he stays gets longer and bigger programme slots, higher obscene salary and the supreme, by today's crap 'standards', accolade appear on "Cerebral Big Brother" after the compulsory frontal lobotomy. "Err I can't get any sleep under this bed wiv that f-ing camera" Anyway if BBC got rid he'd be snapped up by ITV or 5 for even more sodin' brass.

I don't like Jonathan Ross.

But he has paid his dues for his stupidity.

My choice would have been for Brand to stay and Ross to go.

I think BBC should get rid of Ross not because of the money but because of his bad attitude towards women. The comment that he Made to Kiera Knightly congratualing her about not getting plastic surgary was below the belt. Getting Eva Longoria Parker to sit on his knee when it was clear she didn't want to. These are bad things and he should go for those. (Bring back live at the apollo)

I have read a number of the comments supporting Ross and welcoming his return. Can I just remind everybody what he and Brand did was not a prank or a joke or "a bit of fun". What they did was a criminal act, for which most people would have resulted in a criminal conviction. Are we now accepting that people who are "talented and edgy" are exempt from the law? Presumably, if I now go and make an oscene telephone call to one of my neighbours, all I will need to do is make a half-hearted apology and I will get a Florida holiday and no stain on my character. I don't think so. I would be charged and end up in court. Why has this not happened to this "edgy and talented" person?

Ross is overpaid and mostly talentless. I will miss Live at the Apollo, I watched that but not his show.

Any number of people could do his job for a fraction of the cost. Let's have some fresh talent please and put the saved money into some non reality and non soap programs.

I don't care about the whole radio fiasco, it got blown out of all proportion but I do take exception to the amount of money he earns - it's not worth it for a once a week chat show. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the show but now way is it worth that much money! As for Ross 'learning a lesson' what lesson? He still earned millions last year and got three months off over the Christmas period - wish I could get punished like that.

I cannot wait for JR to come back! He is an extremely talented presenter and, despite enjoying Friday Night at the Apollo, Friday nights have not been the same! I think this may have given him just the kick up the backside he needed as he was getting rather cocky. But of course he's cocky! That's how he's got to where is he is, and why millions tune in every week! Yes he overstepped the mark in "Sachsgate", he was trying to impress the younger, edgier and more virile Brand...but we all know that most if that ridiculous debacle was just middle England fuelled media hype. I sincerely hope he doesn't dumb down his act at all.

I think Johnathon Ross is fantastic! i really look forward to his shows and i agree he went OTT but this is why we enjoy watching him, he needs to be careful and not over step the mark again but i think he should come back to our screens as the presenter we all enjoyed before this horrible mess!

I really don't see how the comments on Russel Brand's show were as bad as middle England's making out. Yes, it was rude, but they apologised and seemed sincere enough. "Wasting our license fees" is not a good enough excuse, just because some people don't watch his show doesn't mean those who do should be deprived of it! There's plenty of other shows people don't watch, they're usually on after 10 though, so all the Daily Mail readers are all tucked up by then.

Yes, Friday nights have been on the dull side and yes it will be good to have JR back....but I do hope he has learned from the experience....I have listened to the tapes on YouTube and frankly JR was the one who 'went too far' NOT Brand - or should I say JR goaded Brand along....Let's hope he realises that he is not invincible and he returns to providing the type of entertainment that has made him such a great talk-show host.

I am one of the over thirty five year olds (over Sixty actually) who have missed Jonathan Ross especially on Saturday mornings. I have a good idea which programs would annoy me and avoid viewing or listening to them. I was amazed that people went to the trouble of accessing something that they knew would offend them just to jump on the band wagon.Best of luck Jonathan, save us from Danny Baker.

Think we should give him a second chance even though I was appalled by their antics last year . I do think that the programme has become tired recently though with lots of closed questions, not getting the guests to open up at all. Maybe it's the jolt he needs to get the programme back to the standard it used to be.

well done Jay, couldn't have said it better myself - so hope you don't mind here it is again - 43,000 TV license fees for just one tiresome luvvy? And who knows how many tens of thousands more license fees are wasted on the contracts of other talent-free 'personalities' and weak senior executives? I wouldn't mind if I had a choice but, if I want to have a TV, I have to pay my TV license and have no control over how it is mis-spent.

of course Jonathon should come back, the whole rather silly escapade was very childish and I am sure he regrets it, but come on the daily mail were out to get him and always have been so no surprises that almost everyone who complained were whipped up by them and hadn't heard it! Give us Jonathan back - quite apart from everything else his is the best radio programme on the bbc bar none - and stop making excuses for the shambles that was and is bbc management who I hold entirely responsible.

I think JR is overpaid for what he does. This is not jealousy (before I'm accused) but my assessment of the value he adds to our culture, which is not a lot. I'm disappointed that Stephnn Fry is on the "you can take the dunce's cap off now" show because SF is an extremely interesting polymath who I can listen to for hours, but I'm soory he'll be adding "viewer-pull" to the show. Tom Cruise I can take or leave, he's a good actor but a very poor interview. JR, on the other hand, is a lucky Smart Alec who seems to think it's cool to reference sex and lewdness on his show. It's interesting that his behaviour on Radio 2 and the Film Review show is completely different. So maybe he's pandering to the standards of the BBC1 show's producers? Maybe he's just a puppet of the paymasters after all?

Ross has the best show on TV. I'm sure his razor sharp whit will keep the veiwing figures high enough for ITV to pick up his show if the politically correct minority embarrass the cowardly BBC bosses to axe his show again.

Worst TV interviewer ever, his sexual innuendos to women are in very poor taste,He has the same guests on over and over again,6 million a year not worth it and peeves me as a license fee payer that I pay his wages Money should havebeen spent on good drama which is what the BBC does best.

I switched off from Ross ages ago as a protection against the polluted smut landing in my living room. What goes out comes about. I can only feel sorry for Ross and his ilk. BBC should use the tv tax to search for new talent and give them a chance to earn a few bob too.

Ross is a self promoting, egotistical no-mark. In his early days on FOUR there was a glimmer of hope but that was soon extinguished when his £m salary got to work.

Compare him to Parky (who incidentally became poorer with time) but was infinitely better as a host/presenter. He allowed guests to shine or self-combust as they wished and as a consequence the programmes were so much better (even thirty years ago!).

Sorry. I can't stand the man's conduct, either on the radio or the TV (with the exception of rare glimpses of something on his Film prgramme).

Ross has limited talent although he has a quick wit. The BBC and to be fair all T.V channels have a responsibility to their viewers especially the younger members of public to provide safe, informative or entertaining programms avoiding offfensive or morally corrupt content. Obviously this is no longer the case and the BBC is now equal in producing average and well below average content in equal mesures. My main concern is the salaries that are generated in this industry. As an individual who uses sky+ and as such watches only a relatively tiny ammount of BBC programmes I wonder if the T.V licence is going to be a thing of the past. Maybe the BBC could replace all of its half witted executives and lead the way in dragging our country out of the amoral toilet that it is currently in?

Sack Ross. Any other self respecting company would not tolerate such misconduct. It must be cool working for an employer without boundaries.

Blown out of proportion like most things in the media, I enjoy both Ross & Brand with the way they push the boundaries of comedy. I hope we will continue to see them both, perhaps not on the BBC but that will be their sad loss.

I have long been uncomfortable with Jonathon Ross's 'style' of programme, such that, if there was someone to be on his show that I found interesting, I would watch only that aspect of the show, and then turn off. Likewise, with his Radio show, the minute he started saying that 'it was too late, he had said it' I hit the off button. He is NOT bigger than the BBC - or the British public.

I was not in the least offended by Ross's language, but I was outraged that he feels the normal rules of courtesy don't apply to him. As a broadcaster he should set an example and, whatever he does outside of his work, he should not cross that line between risque and obnoxious. I love Stephen Fry but won't be tuning in - Ross is a spent force as far as I'm concerned. Shame, because I used to enjoy his radio show but don't listen to that any more either - it's the Ross Ego show, not about the music or the guests any more.

the whole ordeal was avoidable - altough i found the prank to be in very bad taste i don't think it should have got as far as a live airing - no they shouldn't have done what they did but hey it was the BBC who aired it with the advantage of hindsight!! I do think however that Mr Ross will have to be careful about how he plays it but the man is far from a fool - he made a big mistake - a poor judgement call - but guess what he is human. I hope his friday night show recovers from it because lets face it he is the best chat show host we have on our tv. I say Good Luck for friday Mr Ross - i will definitley be watching (but really can't stand Tom Cruise - good call getting someone that annoying on so the audience can throw their eggs at him!!)

i really dont see what was so awful about the prank anyway, yes it was in poor taste but it only got 2 the stage it did due to russel brand mocking the daily mails support of the nazis after they did a tiny, literally 3 inch long piece about the sachs show.

and also he was supposed 2 be a guest, they filled the time accordingly.

There seems to a general feeling that this might have been an opportunity for Mr Ross to move on. Nothing much to do with 'the incident', we all make mistakes. More about how tired and predictable the format of both the radio and TV shows have become. I imagine he's got enough money not to have to worry about working too hard and feel he might be better focusing on presenting stuff like Film 2009 where he adopts a more appealing persona and is very thought provoking in his reviews.

Ross represents the BBC and we pay for his performances. If there is some dispute about whether these are acceptable to the people who fund them, he should move to a commercial channel where he can say what he likes and his vast salary (in truth the source of many people's discomfort) is paid for by adverts.

I have never been able to understand his popularity. He seems to have been created by the media. It is time he was recognised for the nothing person he is and was taken out of the public eye. A new presenter should be groomed as soon as possible and Ross returned to the obscurity in which he belongs.

For F's sake! it's not the first or last time someone has said something insulting for the purpose of a joke. It got blown out of proportion and you lot jumped on the bandwagon.

Stop letting this country turn into a nanny state and relax before all our comedians, stifled with new rules and regulations brought on by the bleeting sheep, can't produce anything that is worth listening too or funny anymore!

Friday night without Ross has actually been pretty good. Any talent that he may have is hidden under a desire for smut and double entendre the like of which the Carry On films could only have dreamed of. The turning point for me (turning off, that is) came when Ross laughingly insinuated David Attenborough was getting a little too friendly with the animals he was observing. I found it revolting, and fairly soon after that I ralised it was the man himself (Ross, not Attenborough) who was the revolting one. He's not needed by the BBC. Get rid of him and give the licence payers a somewhat better deal for their money.

I will be pleased to see Ross back on the schedule, Fridays have not been the same without him. I believe that he will have learnt from his mistakes and will soon be back to his same old self, if only slightly more cautious. He is an asset and gem to the BBC and I welcome his comeback with open arms, and although it may take a few weeks or months, I believe that the rest of the public will welcome him too.

As far as I can see, nobody really gained anything from Jonathan's absence. The 'Whitehouse brigade' still have swearing and risque behaviour on television to contend with, the BBC had dire viewing figures as there was nothing of any substance to replace Jonathan Ross with, and we fans had to endure television and radio without the added sparkle that Jonathan provides.

Love him or loathe him, Jonathan is damned good at what he does - one of the best in fact, and I can think of no suitable replacement. Clearly, nor can the BBC. I do fear that the BBC have shot themselves in the foot a little however. I suspect what will happen now is that people will start to complain over the smallest things from Jonathan and the BBC will be forced into a corner by their own past actions.

I for one hope that Jonathan is able to put the past behind him and continue to provide the entertainment that he has provided for many many years.

So who stood to gain most from this ridiculous situation? Possibly Murdoch (Sky/ The Sun) or DMGT (The Daily Mail/ ITN)? Call me an old cynic but the pressure put upon the BBC doesn't seem to have been for the good moral standards of the nation.

Reading these comments I fear that the "Nanny-state" environment that the government has created has spread to the masses. Now everyone is a watchdog… or at least every busy body with nothing in their lives except the pleasure of 'complaining' about trivial matters they find offensive. So as much as I am looking forward the wonderful Ross returning to TV I am frightened about how many trivial complaints the "new Mary Whitehouse" brigade will bombard the BBC with!

Personally, as much as I feel the "Sachsgate" incident was a "poor show" (in the metaphorical sense, not the literal), I have long admired Ross' personality and skill as a presenter. Whilst his Friday night show may not have gripped me so strongly as his "Asian Invasion" and "Japanorama" work (for which I hope to see a return too), I'm pretty confident that he'll not want a repeat performance. If anything, I'm hoping we see a stronger and more focused series in this run, and I honestly wish Mr. Ross all the best in it.
