Has BBC1 become obsessed with comical, It's a Knockout!-style game shows? Hole in the Wall, in which contestants in lycra and cycle helmets are pushed into a pool by a foam wall, debuted last month with a middling 3.3m viewers.
Now Top Gear's Richard Hammond has signed up to host Total Wipeout, another Saturday-night show in which contestants in lycra and cycle helmets try to complete what the hit US version accurately calls "the most ridiculous obstacle course ever assembled". The fun starts on BBC1 early next year.

Anyone who thinks this is rubbish needs to lighten up. The show's just a bit of fun, it doesn't asked to be taken seriously. Although I do think that Richard Hammond should stick to Topgear, not exactly the best presenting on his own, although he doesn't claim to be.

Why is this programme even on the TV? It's not a game show - but was possibly meant to be one. But obviously one which clearly doesn't work, so it has to be edited into a format which needs narration make any sense of it. And what are those four red balls about? No one ever makes it past the 2nd ball!!!??? Pulease take this crap off the TV, and put something else on - even paint drying would be an improvement.

Richard Hammond will do a great job. He is really funny and good with kids, so I will expect this show to succeed. In my opinion he is better than Ant and Dec. In terms of BBC getting more ITVish, they go with viewing and entertainment programmes seem to be the flavour of the year.

I believe that this show was america's most watch show of the summer, and that the show is also n=running in a number of other countries including Australia, so i guess in terms of programming its not a bad choice. Also have you seen some of the shows other channels are running i don't think i can take another Karaoke Tv show.

This one might not be too bad if they can keep it on the scale of the US version, which has everyday (ie, non-fit doughnut gobbling) Americans, going down in sometimes spectacular style that is more in common with a Japanese show, but done bigger and better.

It's quite sad that television (not just the BBC) has become so devoid of originality that it instead tries to recapture the magic and originality of the past television eras by repeating its shows. It just doesn't work.
As for Richard Hammond, like Vernon Kaye, he needs to learn to use the word "no" once in a while. Both have been responsible for hosting some serious tripe on television.

Do you want to just watch boring, depressing serious matters on the TV...? Why dont we just allow some fun and laughs on the TV for once...I think its a great idea, we can all switch off our minds on a Staurday night and giggle instead of worrying about money and everything else in the world.....I VOTE FUN.....Total Wipeout will be that!!!!!

This is what happens when you give an organization a bottomless pit of money. Who at the BBC cares if it is watched by anyone.

I agree totaly, richard hammond usualy makes good TV, but BBC and there programmes are getting worse and worse, more and more ITVish Im beggining to doubt the point of my tv licence...

Goodness me! The BBC is throwing money away on these utterly useless programmes which are an insult to the intelligent, who hopefully won't bother to watch. Hammond should stick to what he does best...Top Gear. As a radio presenter, he admits himself, he is useless. What makes him want to make ridiculous TV programmes as well? The pursuit of the mighty dollar, methinks
