Little Britain - big in America?

In less than a fortnight (on 28 September to be precise) Little Britain USA is unleashed over there, bringing, as Tom Baker's voiceover promises, "culture, class and dignity to America". Sure it does. And we'll be able to see it over here on BBC1 very soon after (before they break off diplomatic relations?).

For what is effectively the fourth LB series, but one made entirely in the States for the HBO channel, Matt Lucas and David Walliams have created new characters such as pumped up jocks Mark and Tom and astronaut Bing Gordyn ("the first man on the moon…with a moustache"), as well as relocating much-loved characters Stateside.

Sebastian smarms his way around the White House, Lou and Andy check into a motel and Vicky Pollard gets packed off to Wilderness Lodge boot camp. Which is, after all, where she belongs.

Harry Enfield did make to to the States, albeit in a series of Burger King commercials as a sort of self-help expert with a very large teeth and a very broad "Plains" accent, promoting the Big Angus Beef burger. I thought it was funny but I've always liked Harry. Most other Americans got that he was taking the p***, but did not know Harry was a Brit so did not get the other half of the joke, I think. And if there's anything Americans get too much of, it's red meat... can't wait to see Rowan Atkinson promoting something like high fructose corn syrup. I will check out Lucas and Walliams new program on 9/28, hope it does not lose it's inherent Britishness, and that people here actually understand it. Sketch comedy here tends to be so overly broad and never knows when to stop the sketch. After seeing series 3, I think Matt and David may have crossed so far beyond the line of subtlety to be understood Stateside. (God bless 'em)

Little Britain was funny, in places, at first but like so many other programmes, they don't know when to quit and keep turning out the same old stuff. It seems that Walliams and Lucas have too many people around them telling them how great they are and they believe them.

It'll be very interesting to see the US reaction. I know Little Britain has an underground following with comedy afficionadoes and Anglophiles, but will regular HBO subscribers "get it"? Will the intentionally British characters make an impact? Will L&W's American accents prove utterly laughable (for all the wrong reasons) to American ears? Will it be as crap as series 3 and that dire Christmas special? I can't wait for the US reviews! But either way, you have to hand it to L&W for giving it a go. Would Harry Enfield have had this opportunity if his early-'90s heyday had been delayed by 10 years? Hmm.
