Well, all in all I think that was a satisfactory outcome. Of the five finalists, the two most deserving were first and second, and in third place was Sara, who I've found extremely entertaining. Yes, you could argue it's a travesty that Rex made it to the final, but I suppose even I have a grudging acceptance that he created some necessary conflict. Either way, Rachel winning does a lot for my faith in the humanity of BB viewers.

Because, unlike some people, I think Rachel really is a nice person. I think she actually is the supportive friend she appears to be. I believe her when she says she doesn't hate anyone. And I think she genuinely does advocate the "do unto others" approach to life (which works perfectly, unless you happen to be into masochism). I certainly don't believe that Rachel's supposed "fence-sitting" was that most evil of all evil things, "a game plan".

Although it might not be overt, Rachel is a strong person too. Strong enough to take abuse without feeling the need to dish it out. So she weathered Rex's storm but didn't retaliate because she'd rather not poison the atmosphere any further. In that sense she's a worthy winner and the fact that viewers chose her is a good thing.

On the other hand, a houseful of Rachels would have been very dull indeed, and I much preferred Mikey's more robust approach to Rex. He had that extra bit of gumption, that maverick spirit - plus the intellectual nouse - to stand up to the bullying and the bulls**ting when no-one else would. I really respect Mikey for that. In fact, I'm grateful to him. He saved me from kicking a hole in my nice flat-screen TV by channelling my frustration when Rex's behaviour got too much.

Rex. Ha. Before the evictions began, everyone gave a short speech. Mikey was surprised to have made a genuine friend. Darnell had learnt that he has to give respect if he wants to receive it. And some housemates were just happy to have had the experience. OK, a bit mawkish maybe, but it worked for me and I felt that all the sentiments were genuine and expansive. So what did Rex talk about? Well, how great Rex is, of course: "My father has moulded me into what I consider a very nice young man." Unbelievable. Mikey may not be able to see, but when it comes to his own faults Rex is completely blind.

And yet, much as it pains me, I'm going to give the last word to Rex. You see, he finally said something worth listening to. Something that maybe explains why Rachel was the right choice after all. "It's just so easy to be horrible all the time," he moaned. "It's a lot harder to be nice."

I watched Big Brother 9 in its entirity and am of the opinion that it was up there with the most boring series ever, together with a group of the most non descript house mates who possessed very few redeemable qualities. My one surprise was that Rachael won it when it appeared that it had been set up for Rex to win. Examples of this was that Rex was the only one to have his Girlfriend with him (its besides the point that she was an obnoxious piece of work who showed him in a more clearer light). He was even given a quality bottle of Champagne when the rest were given presents ranging from a bunch of grapes to pizza and a yogurt. However, more diturbingly, he was allowed to systimatically bully the less combatitive house mates. It may have been in a more quiet way than Alexandras bellowing and to be fair he didnt descend to the tactics of Dennis by spitting in any ones face, but it was bullying none the less.It seems that in the current climate when bullying is often a significant issue in the media, mixed messages are being given out. It appears that it is often the case that whilst some bullying kid at school is castigated in the press any bullying celebrety such as Jeremy Kyle, Gordon Ramsey,Anne Robinson etc are rewarded by huge salaries for continuing in this way. It has even been suggested that there are plans for Rex to have his own show. I wonder what his form of bullying will take if this takes place perhaps he will sling the food at the contestants if it doesnt reach his standards. You can be sure that Rachael will rapidly fade into obscurity as she has committed the cardinal sin of being "too nice"

I was so chuffed that Rachel won. Its interesting to note that in our cynical world there were only a couple of other housemates who thought Rachel's niceness was genuine. And its heartwarming to reflect that most viewers thought the same and were prepared to register support for someone who may not have been 'entertaining' but restored faith in young people. She will make a fantastic teacher.
