Rough Cuts: Kevin McCloud - Grand Designs is not “property porn”

In these straitened times, surely we’re all entitled to a little fantasy? And if the phrase “property porn” is good enough for such esteemed organs as The Times and Forbes magazine, why should Grand Designs be so coy?

"I don't like to use the 'P' word... Property, that is," says presenter Kevin McCloud.

"The series isn't about property and I don't think people watch it simply to slobber over the finished product, either.

"Our audience stays with us the whole of the programme because they follow a story - and pornography isn't known for its strong storylines, put it that way."

Perhaps tales of visiting plumbers don’t appeal to Mr McCloud, but those simple stories are enough for some of us.

And while it’s true viewers might fast-forward through some of the wordier moments, the suggestion that they don’t follow the drama to its conclusion, well, that’s just plain wrong.
